  2. That's not how The Economist magazine described this deal at that time. The magazine stated that if Porsche had borrowed the money to acquire the VW shares, they would have been obliged, by law, to report this to the relevant German authority. But, since Porsche financed this from internal funds, no such reporting was legally required. Consequently the hedge funds did not know that the buyer of the VW shares was a single entity: Porsche. Thus, when the hedge funds had to re-purchase VW shares to replace the borrowed ones, they were horrified to learn that there was only one seller with any quantity of shares available: Porsche. A very neat operation in which Porsche, just a bunch of engineers, made out like bandits.
