  1. There are many small and peaceful communities in Ontario. Get yourself a good road atlas and go exploring. My wife and I love road trips, and we have been to every town, village, settlement, village, nook, and cranny, on the Ontario side of the Great Lakes. May of those towns are very picturesque. If you are looking for solitude, look for villages/settlements on the Bruce Peninsula. For REAL solitude try Manitoulin Island. Both are straight up Hwy 6. Plus a 1 1/2 hr ferry ride from Tobermory to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island.

  2. What you describe is true for every single-employer town. When that employer shuts down, the town is in deep trouble.
