Actually it was in the early 1980's that interest rates were sky-high. I renewed my mortgage in June 1981 and had to pay 18 1/4% interest, up from 11% in 1976. A colleague of mine was saddled with 22% mortgage interest in October of 1981!

It would not. Ceilings are very well insulated nowadays.

@mikebrown9781 In the early 1980's I was early in my professional career and only had a mortgage and some RRSP. Today with my investments I am not too concerned with what interest rates do.

@echoe4806 We'd all be bankrupt and homeless. When I was facing 18% interest rates in 1981, I spoke to my department manager and others that I respected for their advice. They all told me to keep the mortgage term as short as possible. In the event I renewed it for one year. At the end of that year I borrowed money from a good friend paying him interest at the rate the bank was paying him. With that money I paid off the mortgage. One year later I had paid off my friend, including the interest I had promised. We remained very good friends until he died 30+ years later.

@cathygibson5157 We all have to die, that's for certain. I, however, intend to hang on to life for as long as possible. Life is a gift, and I wish to enjoy it for as long as possible.

Only simple minded people partake in activities where the government goons can identify individuals and harass them, legally and otherwise. Take a lesson from the French: They go on public strike when the government gets too far out-of-line. Consequently I suggest that Canadians phone in sick to their employer on a given day for a particular number of days. What with Covid and the Flu reappearing now, this is a plausible reason. Best of all it is legal with no recourse possible by anyone. Therefore, pick a day and month. I suggest January 15., 2023, and let it run for as long as you can. I think 2 weeks and we will see a new government. Simply stay home and enjoy family life, your hobby, whatever. Are you up to this, Canadians???
