In a nutshell, Premium gas simply has a higher octane rating than Regular. Higher octane rating means better detonation resistance, which is useful for engines which have high compression ratios (more than, say, 10:1) or are equipped with turbos or superchargers. If you drive a 'normal' car, regardless of its price, you're probably fine with Regular.

@jeanbolduc5818 Perhaps, but certainly not for bridge design.

@JoshLemer All those beautiful bridges were not designed by Quebecois!

nt: 1000 ton ship is a rowboat in this context. Try 100,000 tons for the ship that hit the Baltimore bridge

@ntindo Kinetic energy K of a moving object: K = 1/2 x mass x velocity squared, ie. K = 1/2mV**2. Thus one can see that a 100,000 ton freighter has 100x the kinetic energy of a 1,000 ton ship. (This is greatly simplified and ignores the payload on the ship). Apart from building an artificial island around each bridge pier, there is very little that can be done to stop such a moving mass.

LH: That's the CBC being politically correct.

@iron___ They also verify and CERTIFY that the structure was built in compliance with the design. This certification can legally only be done by a PEng licensed in Ontario, for structures in Ontario.

@Guy_With_A_Laser I worked in Quebec and in Ontario where I now reside, and I contributed to both QPP and CPP. My wife who worked in Ontario all her life and gets the maximum CPP payment, gets just a few dollars more in CPP payment than I do. The difference in not large, less than $100 per month. This difference is probably due to the fact that I was self employed foe the 10 years before retirement and, because the were several lean years in income, I am being penalized for that reduced income and pension plan contribution. Let's see, I contributed the maximum allowable for over 30+ years, followed by a few lean years, and I am being penalized. But then who ever thought that governments and theit plans are fair?

je: You might want to check which lakes and ports the St Lawrence Seaway connects to upstream.
