  10.  @kurtjohansson1265  It was the German navy you idiot. Yes the submarine losses were high, but those boats were very effective. Read earlier submissions above about the losses of the British and US air force. Pretty hair raising I would say, and not half as effective as the German subs.

  11. My father was temporarily assigned to a Flak Geschuetz. He told me it was pretty deadly, especially the later ones with RADAR assistance. In one instance each of the 4 gun barrels fired twice and 4 allied aircraft were destroyed.

  12.  @jetpilot3714  Another problem with gas turbines is that the entire hot section needs to be made of refractory metal alloys, especially the rotating parts. Whereas in piston engines only the exhaust valves and valve seats have this requirement for refractory alloys. The main constituents of these alloys are nickel, chromium, tungsten at that time, and these were in short supply in Germany.

  14. All the grandstanding by the Brits and especially the USA fails to consider the effort it took to defeat a small European Nation. It took the ENTIRE capitalist and communist world almost 6 years to defeat that little country! The pissing and moaning by the Brits that "they fought the baaad Naaazis alone for xxx years" is too laughable, because Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA were supplying material to Britain from practically day one.
