SymbianL Did you just post that the London metro is "more modern"?? How so, when their tunnels are so damned SMALL that whenever you board a train (freight car with no forward view), you must take a giant step up as well as duck down to keep your head from banging into the top of the vehicle!! In a sense, New York`s has a MUCH MORE MODERN power delivery system, using only ONE THIRD RAIL, AND NOT A THIRD AND "FOURTH" RAIL, as London does (UNSAFE AS ALL HELL!)!!!!
I WILL admit, though, London`s system is MUCH CLEANER, due to the fact that there's service only 18 hours per day, instead of 24 like New York!!

@IONATVS ....And THAT'S the main reason our transportation systems in these United States simply DON'T FUNCTION THE WAY THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO; everything's all AUTOMOBILIATED!! True, REAL cities serve their populations AT THE HUMAN LEVEL; and this can ONLY be done if the city had a good, pervasive RAIL-BASED public transportation system. It MUST be understood that a bus is nothing more than just another AUTOMOBILE occupying the roadways, and the exclusive use of buses literally FORCES people to purchase private cars, if no rail transit exists in the area. It's been either FORGOTTEN, or simply not understood, that cities are built to serve its residents AT THE BASIC, HUMAN LEVEL OF THE PEDESTRIAN; the need for a personal motor vehicle TOTALLY DESTROYS the true "cityhood" of ANY metropolis, as the people cannot be served at their basic level of functioning, as they are in a rail-based, TRUE, REAL CITY!!!!

George Ojeda I thought I explained the MDBF or "mean distance between failure" phenomenon clearly enough; in case I didn`t, here I go again: this is the distance that a vehicle can travel from critical repair to critical repair. The MTBF or "mean time between failure" is how long something, from an important piece of machinery to structural members (such as highways) last from initial installation to the point where it demands repair in order to be safe.
I mentioned that rail lines, as well as rail vehicles, have the GREATEST measured MDBF/MTBF of ANY land-based vehicles. Another item worth mentioning is the fact that, for such a SHORT trip from Miami to New York City, JUST ONE JET ENGINE of even the smallest aircraft consumes MORE THAN THREE TIMES THE FUEL that just three HSR trains would use!! Furthermore, planes ALSO have a VERY LOW MTBF, thus requiring MUCH MORE MAINTENANCE than trains!!
Yet, this STUPID federal (and several STUPID state governments) will continue to oversubsidize the two most UNSAFE and WASTEFUL transportation modes, the automobile and the airplane; as a result of that EXTREME STUPIDITY, the vast majority is locked into the erroneous mindset that "trains are no good for ANYTHING but freight"----which is one of the WORST transportation myths we ALL tolerate today!!!!

TheGuyAtTheWheel "....so why punish them for it?"....the most obvious reason is that, even in our large metropolitan areas, transit funding has ALWAYS been commandeered for some automotive use!! Furthermore, transit patrons have been severely punished, in fact literally ABUSED, by having their efficient electric rail systems destroyed in favor of automotive transportation, with Los Angeles being the most egregious example!!!!
"....do you use bus or rail?" I happen to use BOTH; and with light rail, one MUST often worry about traffic, since most light rail lines are constructed to be RIGHT SMACK AT GRADE, WITHOUT ANY SEPARATION FROM AUTOMOTIVE TRAFFIC except, maybe a painted line or a very small physical barrier. SELDOM are light rail lines constructed on sealed rights-of-way!!!! (The subway, being heavy rail, is FULLY grade separated, whether elevated or underground).
As far as the bus is concerned....

@rosesmith6208 The problem in TOO MANY places in the USA is that they're AUTOMOTIVE-BASED; which effectively prevents movement as its most BASIC LEVEL, which is PEDESTRIAN ACTIVITY!! It is, after all, STUPID to force people to purchase a personal vehicle for what can be conducted using THEIR OWN TWO FEET!!!! All because of the "need" for a personal motor vehicle, humanity must take a back seat to its creation, one which actually DESTROYS more than builds. This might be okay if it were an ACTUAL CHOICE made by some people; however, it's a decision made by government and certain industries that's keeping people bound to having NO OTHER CHOICE BUT AUTOMOTIVE TRANSPORTATION!!!!!! The literal DENIAL OF OTHER OPTIONS is the BIGGEST reason why our "metropoli" really AREN'T "cities"; because "cities" serve their residents AT THE PEOPLE LEVEL, which is to say, the PEDESTRIAN LEVEL, whereas automobiliated areas serve no one but the industries that have literally pushed themselves into transportation dominance, with the huge hand of governmental assistance.
Btw, if you study the foundation of the third Reich, you'll discover that the autobahn had a HUGE purpose other than the movement of military equipment and personnel; the autobahn was designed to REDUCE THE POPULATION DENSITY of certain urban areas in an effort TO PREVENT PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENTS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, since it's been LONG discovered that people in high-density areas communicate MUCH MORE EFFECTIVELY than those in low-density areas, due to the difficulty of performing surveillance in high-density living arrangements. In fact, Hitler not only ordered the QUICK construction of the autobahn, but ordered a German automaker to produce a vehicle known as the "PEOPLE'S CAR"!!!!

Neeraj Indra "....better...." possibly in an "eye-candy" sort of way. As far as cleaner, you DEFINITELY have a point there!! The main reason they're so clean is because they only operate for 16 to 18 hours per day, thus forcing THOUSANDS, if not MILLIONS, of commuters to use automotive means for their journeys!! New York operates their subway 24/7/365 with very little downtime, and has been doing so for MORE THAN A CENTURY!!!! No other transit agency in the ENTIRE WORLD can say that!!
Btw, New York`s subway cars offer what the other systems may not; a FORWARD VIEW!! Although not an important necessity, such a window allowing an almost UNOBSTRUCTED look at the area ahead can be considered a VITAL LUXURY!!!! Landmarks can be much more easily discerned and located, as well as curves, entrances and exits with tunnels, and platform orientations!!!!
In my (rather VERY personal) opinion, if a transit vehicle can offer a forward view, and one is not provided, it's nothing more than an over-glorified FREIGHT CAR!!!!

Verbal Dk Just what good is automation, platform barriers (which are nothing more than an expensive nuisance), and, ESPECIALLY, a LACK OF A HUMAN OPERATOR when the system strands you several miles away from home, simply because it REFUSED TO DO ITS JOB OF BEING ABLE TO TRANSPORT YOU HOME due to its daily schedule?!
Sure, a forward view is a minor luxury, as I`'ve stated before; I`'ve ridden on systems with and without a forward view, and what I`'ve experienced, passengers who are able to obtain one usually do a much better job of navigating the system, even if presently underground!! But, someone will say: "how can you discern landmarks in an underground tunnel?" Well, there ARE such things as signal and interlock locations, and there ARE passengers who know how to read the same signals the train operator does, and can IMMEDIATELY tell whether they`re on the correct train or not. Without a forward view, a passenger has to find out the HARD WAY whether they`'ve made the correct decision, because onboard announcements often aren't accurate!!
Btw, just HOW was I being sarcastic?! I was just simply stating FACTS!!
YES, I WAS BORN IN NEW YORK CITY, AND THE SUBWAY HAS SERVED ME WELL, IN FACT, BETTER THAN ANY OTHER TRANSIT SYSTEM I`'VE RIDDEN!! I NOTICE YOU HAVEN'T MENTIONED A SINGLE THING ABOUT LOCAL AND EXPRESS SERVICE, SOMETHING ALMOST NO OTHER TRANSIT SYSTEM HAS!!!!

Verbal Dk Automation, inherently, is not a problem. It`s implementing it onto a system where people`s jobs will be eliminated if such automation were installed. And, about that comment about the forward view, in my experience, especially in rail-based cities, people OF ALL AGES have been known to visit the front of the train just to use the window (which was a window installed into the doors at each end of the coach), and not just kids, as you claim.
A transit system isn't "modern" due to its automation; what makes it "modern" is its ability to keep pace with the needs of the transit-riding public in a safe and efficient manner; and yes, New York City, despite the oceans of urine (which are EVERYWHERE in the city), does a MOST ADMIRABLE JOB!!

Dave Greenlaw I believe we BOTH become frustrated over some of these video posts; for example, I saw a video on the "O-Bahn" bus line in Adelaide, South Australia, and it sure seemed like the announcer DIDN'T know what he was talking about!! First, he says that busway construction is cheaper than rail; I don't see how, considering all of the prefab sections they had to correctly place into position.
This MORON of an announcer (or maybe it was the WRITER) went on to say that the ongoing operational costs were MUCH lower than an equivalent rail line! BULLSHIT!! There is NEVER any mention of the vehicle maintenance costs, or the unit replacement cost per vehicle (they never mention that buses wear out MUCH, MUCH QUICKER than trains)!!!! Also, the costs of fluid replacement for the engine and transmission, as well as tire replacement costs, are NEVER mentioned!!
In that video, you will see a line of buses following one another rather closely; this then brings up an interesting point: railcars can be coupled together into trains several coaches long, with only ONE operator!!!! A bus line would need SEVERAL OPERATOR to handle the same amount of passengers!!!!
Lastly, but not least, is the fact that a bus is nothing more or less than an AUTOMOBILE, just like ANY CAR (or truck)!!!!

kansasthunderman1 Sure, Hitler didn't invent the 'stretch of paved highway'; however, he was the VERY FIRST PERSON on the planet to assemble a collection of interconnected highways into a network. Hitler didn't invent cars; those were, however, made PRACTICALLY FUNCTIONING in Germany (its viability as a transportation device being proven), and the assembly line manufacturing of such vehicles was developed (I think) by Henry Ford (btw, Ford the 2nd was an American nazi, just like Charles Lindbergh!!)!!!!
You mention people "voting with their $$$, and still buying and driving cars"; do you know why?!
IT'S BECAUSE ALL OTHER MODES OF GROUND TRANSPORT, INCLUDING BICYCLES AND PEDESTRIAN ACTIVITY, HAS BEEN GREATLY REDUCED IN FAVOR OF FORCING THE PUBLIC BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR!!!!
Someone once mentioned that corporate industry controls BOTH the government AND the people here in this country; they're CORRECT in a sense, because the ongoing automotive damage has been inflicted upon the people through FORCED automotive ownership, which is nothing more than a form of FASCISM!!!!!!!!

kansasthunderman1 HA! If what you're mentioning is true, pertaining to the choice of mode of transportation, then WHY has the federal government been bent over for the petrochemical industry, which VERY HEAVILY supports the automobile and the airplane, simply because both machines are EXCESSIVELY fuel-intensive, which rail transportation is NOT!!
Now, you may mention diesel locomotives on the nation's railroads; that was a choice made by a consolidation of small companies aggregating (but not merging) into a semi-political force that manipulated various politicians to enact HORRIBLE legislation demanding that electric railroads NOT sell their surplus energy to the public; this then made the power plants too expensive to operate, and the railroads were FORCED to switch to INEFFICIENT, EXPENSIVE, and UNSAFE diesel powered locomotives, which then led to a decline in service levels for both passenger AND freight divisions of EACH AND EVERY RAILROAD IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY!!!!
Add to the fact that railroads have had to pay their own way for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING they receive, while the automobile and the airplane MUST survive on tremendously EXCESSIVE GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES (thanks to the energy corporations)!!!!!!
