In order for a metropolitan area to thrive, it must have a MIX of transportation modes, RAIL as well as the automobile (which includes buses and trucks as well as cars)!! Rail can create high density along its corridors, and it can EASILY coexist with the automobile through the use of strategically situated park-and-ride stations!!!!

  7. Alex Smith ONE VERY GOOD way is to IMPOSE rail lines into an area in the same way that the highways were IMPOSED into the areas they now occupy! In almost no time at all, new densities will be created along those rail lines, with clusters of activity located at stations, otherwise known as: Transit Oriented Development.

Besides, the car is actually the RUIN of this nation; look at the quality of humanity so addicted to rubber tires/ steering wheel transport, and compare it with the quality of humanity in a rail-based city. Now, go watch Disney’s “Mr. Walker and Mr. Wheeler”; and see what I mean.

  13.  @aryanbhuta3382  Simply compare the people in a rail-based city to those existing in a automobiliated area. Those in the rail-based city are much more ready to quickly socialize and form large groups of friends and acquaintances; in automobiliated areas, people tend to stay as far apart from one another as is practicable. Humans are social beings, and to keep people in isolation in small groups, such as what excessive automotive use does, reduces, or in some cases even eliminates the desire to coexist with others. As far as humanity is concerned, New York City is a far more social area than Los Angeles....
