Since the 1950's, in America with the birth of rock and roll and selling movies to teens, the concept of "the teenager" was born.
Ever since then, teen-agers, a distinct period of life between childhood and adulthood, with money in their pockets and a new market to sell to the idea of the teen identity and which group to buy into and belong to became profitable to all businesses.
Whether you were a biker or a soul boy, a jock, a "cool cat" or "unhip", you had to pick an identity and buy all the clothes and music, and "stuff" to display that allegiance to the world.
In the 60's you were a mod or a rocker, in the 70's a hippy, a flower child, a straight working for "the man", a punk etc
In the 80's you were a New Romantic or a metal fan etc
In the 90's it was cool to be into britpop, the Manchester scene, into raves etc
What do kids have now?... Gender identity... You have to pick one!
Same need as teenagers to forge an identity for themselves. Whatever the decade you pick from the options available.
Then you grow up.
But this is the reason the "binary" has been fractured. When there's so much money to be made from the gender industry why restrict to two?
