  1. Even up the 1960s and 70s, in the UK anyway, the reason to get married was to have a legitimate acceptable full time partner for sex. To live together was frowned on, but everything was ok if you got married. All the kids you were at school with had both parents, married to each other, and a kid with unmarried, divorced or single parents was incredibly rare, and you kind of felt sorry for them. Now that's the norm
