Hamlet's to be or not to be soliloquy says it all, we continue to suffer the pains of now because we fear what we might be going on to. Might we end up out of the frying pan, but into the fire? No one can ever know so it's safest not to risk it.

@skylinefever Not really. The existence of God wasn't something that was doubted when Shakespeare was writing. He wasn't debating the existence of God with the soliloquy. Shakespeare himself was a Catholic I believe (even though Catholicism had been outlawed by this time). More that the speech is speculating on what lies beyond death. Presumably he saw suicide as a sin that could lead to eternal suffering. That to go against God's will with self slaughter would be committing a mortal sin, to break one of the ten commandments, thou shalt not kill. To presume to go against God's wishes would end badly. That he wouldn't have compassion for the pain you felt you were in but that only He had the right to give or end life. That he wouldn't forgive the sin. That it was God's will that you be in pain and to put faith in him to end your pain when he deemed it time. To end your suffering is not in your power, not your right to decide, to shortcut your suffering. That if you dare to try, you end up suffering more. Also, Pascal didn't come along with his philosophical musings for another 100 years ago Shakespeare couldn't have been alluding to it 🤓
