  1. I was in Astoria OR, for a few weeks and learned that the heroes of the town were bar pilots. These guys who sail or even fly via helicopter on to the big ships in order to navigate them through the sand bars as the ship goes up the Columbia river. Its not an easy job, and they earn a lot of money because like being an airline pilot, making a mistake can have catastrophic results.
