Progressives have to understand at some point that homelessness isn’t just a matter of real estate. They always sound offended by the idea that homeless people have mental illnesses and addictions. It’s a huge problem and it has to be acknowledged before it can be solved.

@haruhisuzumiya6650 you’re right, my point is that I hear young progressives often laugh at the idea that people have mental health or addiction problems and say it’s just a housing issue. Or they say those issues are used to vilify homeless people, it’s just factual and they need help and aren’t getting any. Denying the underlying problems doesn’t help them at all.

@Cussy69_420 yes housing, shelters etc should be provided. But you said “ so what if they’re mentally ill or on drugs” I’m talking about people I see in SF who are so out of it that they can’t be taken to shelters, they need to be hospitalized but it’s almost impossible to get people treatment if they don’t want it and mentally ill people often don’t think they need help. My point is that the biggest issue is to get them treated for the problems that cause them to be homeless. In my city I’d say drug treatment programs should be a top priority, esp for the many young street kids who might have a chance to turn their lives around. Many people need medication and use street drugs instead. Sadly many of these people will never get help and will die homeless. So focusing just on housing and as I said scoffing at the idea that drugs and mental illness is a big factor doesn’t help anybody. And it’s naive , I hear it all the time from progressives.

@haruhisuzumiya6650 I didn’t say all homeless people have those problems, but what I hear from progressives is that it’s rare and most of them just lost their housing due to high rent costs, that’s also overgeneralizing isn’t it? And ignoring the root causes of many situations doesn’t help anyone. Not that anyone is doing anything to help but if they were it would probably be more useful to push for drug rehab and mental health treatment before shelter spaces. Many homeless people can’t stay in shelters because they’re too out of it , they need treatment.
