It has always been a tightrope for the IDF in the preceding conflicts since 1948. Defeat your opponent and do it quickly to minimize collateral damage amongst the Muslim population located in the vicinity. The older generation of Israeli leadership understood this,maybe because they were involved in the initial displacing of the Palestinian population from their homes ( look up what Moshe Dayan said about this .) Take too long to achieve your Military goals and the mounting civilian casualties will turn the Diplomatic arena firmly against you. This may seem to be nothing important for those who blindly support Israel but this isn't the 1940s 50s 60s or 70s. The US isn't the Military superpower that it was .there are other economic blocks developing that will challenge the US hegemony and if the Diplomatic battle field is lost then an alliance of those opposed to what the Israeli State is doing will become a serious existential threat to the State. The difference between the Zionists in the first 3 decades of the existence of Israel and the last 3 decades is that while people like Dayan were experienced in being the underdog and had the wisdom to hold back when necessary the current leadership exemplified by the corrupt Netanyahu still think that this is the 1990s and therefore they can massacre Muslim civilians with no consequences and believe that their Military is still of the same material as the initial few decades of its existence.
