You can not compare the USA with the EU. America is a far more stable and homogeneous country. The USA has a single language, culture, currency and have been a single entity for a far longer period of time. The EU in comparison is a mess (The UK had a very different legal system). But culturally member states will resit further integration, alot of the individual member states identity can be traced back 1000 years.
