England is a very old historic place. Here we have a thing called steak and kidney pudding. It is a main. We also have Christmas pudding. It is is dessert. But both are steamed in a similar way and have a similar shape. Both were historically made with suet (black pudding was historically made with suet and was steamed) I think the word seems to have branched out to cover all deserts over the centuries be honest.
