200 years ago, England beat Napoleon. It financed the entire European war effort. And Londons reach is global. it's never been just Europe. Its litterly the centre of the world.

It was never about stocks and shares. London is a place for very rich people to hide their money. London has a net work of colonies to do this.

@bixbysnyder-00 Culturally, the English never fitted in with the Europeans.

@bixbysnyder-00 If you look at trade, we ran a constant deficite with the EU. So I disagree. And we were one of the main contributors to the budget. We gave them £15 billion and got £5 billion back. So, no they needed us more.

@bixbysnyder-00 ...and politically the EU ran a system of law orginating in Napoleonic France. We are a common law country, it caused chaos!!

@moggadah "An integration project" That was the problem. The English have a remarkable sense of national identity. Everyone was onboard with a free trade agreement, but in terms of a political union it went to far!!

@haraldhardrade7539 Yes, the British financed them!!

@MIEJ4 We do have a free trade agreement. It's called "The EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement." We've also signed a free trade agreement with the "comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, " which is most of Asia, Canada, and Australia

@chrisjackson1215 I mean physically it is the center. Its positioning allows London to trade with people all over the world. Not just Europe. And London has a network of old colonies where you can stash your cash away tax free. No other countries has this.

@knoll9812 Well we are still technically in the EU. Northern Ireland is part of the UK while still having access to the EU. And we have a free trade agreement too. We can also sign new trade agreements like the trans pacific partnership. Which we've done.

@theliato3809 Until the 2019 election. Boris just replaced the mps.

@IMelkor42 By 2015, millions of voters were voting for UKIP. It was splitting the conservative vote He had no choice.

@IMelkor42 By 2015, millions of voters were voting for UKIP. It was splitting the conservative vote. The debate needed to be settled. They also gave Scotland an independence referendum too.

@IMelkor42 Historically the UK has a habit of holding these types of votes every 30 or so years

The amusing thing about Brexit and the minds of the remainers was that English nationalism was bad. However, Scotish nationalism and the break up of a very old country were good. It was pure hatred of the English was the reason they wanted to stay.

@maxcream6726 Maybe. But countries like England and America are aggressive. Their political systems allow them to reinvent themselves if required
1
@chrisjackson1215 It a fact. London is the center of the world. The zero degree meridian passes through Greenwich.
1
@chrisjackson1215 You can't disagree.

....The British economy has morphed multi times since the end of the 2nd world war. 1945-80 was the end of the Empire Attlee Mixed economy period. And between 1980 and now was the Thatcherite Neo liberal period. Two very different ways to run a country. The UK is always changing.
