Historically, most people rented in this country. Home ownership is only a recent social intervention.

Renters pay market value rent. If rents are high its because their are not enough rental properties in the market

@enemystand2981 The idea of owning a house only became the norm in the 70s/80s. Thatcher was primeminister.

@colonelcrackerz2320 It's 100% true. 100 years ago 20% owned a house while 80% were in the private rental market.

@Cronhour 60% are owned, 20% are private renters znd 20% live in social housing. 50% of social housing in london is housed by imigrants.

@l3eatalphal3eatalpha I live in a terraced house built in 1890. Millions of people do. It's 130 years old. The quality was fine. They had community in mind when these houses were built. They built schools, playing fields, pubs and shops. The design was very intelligent in the Victoria period.

yes, and their would be even fewer rental properties to rent. Good plan.

@l3eatalphal3eatalpha It is true. In 1920 80% were in the private rental market. 20% owned a home. House ownership peaked in the mid 00s.

@Cronhour Social housing actually still makes up 20% of the housing mix. It only peaked at around 30% in 1980.

@The2wanderers If you don't have some form of profit their is zero incentive to build any form of rental properties. Which is actually one of the problems causing the shortage in the marketplace now.

The more you annoy landlords and interfere in the marketplace, the worse it will become.

@allergy5634There is a whole stock of cheap houses in the UK. Buy one and stop complaining.

@Whatif623 The issue is now adays is any form of intervention in the market, and landlords just sell up and leave. It is pushing up rents. Times have moved on. The answer is more landlords, so the market is flooded with cheap rental properties.

The answer isnt attacking landlords. The answer is to figure out how to get away from the ridiculous rental sector. Which is why people get married, you are sharing the costs and risks with someone else.

@DunnCarnage People can't survive by themselves. Get a partner and split the costs.
