@FlameG102 . That really depends. I have a 12 year old car that has been paid off for about 6 years. I don't mind dropping $1000 on it if it keeps it running another couple of years. When I buy new car it will be a luxury car and I'm looking at $500-$600 per month in payments so keeping the old clunker going for another 2-3 years is more than justified. Too many clueless people think buying a new car is more cost effective than keeping a paid off car going for much less in maintenance and repairs. That said, the owner needs to decide if the savings in having no car payment is worth it. If I had to suddenly drop $3k or more on my car I might not do it.

@craigjorgensen4637 . Sorry, but I've owned a car for over twenty years and have performed countless repairs on my own vehicles. If a shop comes to me to replace a part that I know damn well is working fine that's the last time I go to that shop. This isn't debatable for me. Maybe clueless customers will approve anything the mechanic throws at them but not all customers are this clueless.

The more I watch this guy the more I'm convinced he's a sloppy mechanic putting on a show for youtube.
8
Yeah, I found this part weird. I feel that he didn't want to waste time and decided it was easier to up sale a new radiator. As a customer I would have told him to put the car back together and I would have found another shop as there wasn't a leak to justify a new radiator.
7
Yep. I do a lot of my car work but due to limited resources I have the local shop take care of some stuff. I took the car in to the shop last week and they recommended replacing tires and repairing a couple of leaks in addition to alignment. I had them take care of all of it. My car has been paid off for a few years and a few hundred bucks to keep it running at least another couple of years is more than worth the cost of fixing it. The good news is that the 12 year old car drives like new after replacing most suspension components, tire, re-alignment and keeping up with general maintenance. I couldn't be happier to not have a car payment. If I were to sell my car today I would make someone very happy as it doesn't have any serious maintenance issues to be addressed at the moment.
5
Yeah, this guy is clearly very sloppy. Although he seems like a nice guy I would not want him working on my vehicle. He practically had the control/arm or knuckle hanging off the brake line while trying to yank out the axle.
5
Gotta love free speech. Eventually, the truth will prevail.
5
@loubakker5000 . Why is it a good idea to "replace both?" In what world is replacing a radiator preventive maintenance. GTFO!
4
@williameldridge9382 . Or, hear me out... repair your own vehicle and personal computer to avoid being taken to the cleaners. I understand the part about the labor. But as someone else in the comments mentioned, I would rather replace the parts myself and if need be take the assembled car to the shop and have them refill the AC system. Personally, I would rather buy the compressor and freon and learn to do this myself in which case I have new tools for life. Either way, a customer was fleeced of another $200+ because of a stubborn bolt. People treat their cars like they are disposable and bitch about repair cost but also refuse to learn how to maintain their own vehicles.

Ray probably makes more per year than 99% of his viewers. But feel free to watch his entire video catalog.
4
That's nice. But we live in a different world than the one you grew up in.
4
For sure. But this job was 95% labor so I can't imagine it was over $1000 despite what others say in the comments.
4
We don't have enough information to make your claim. For all we know, the engine and transmission still have another 100k miles left in it which more than justifies $1k in repairs.
3
@Chlorate299 . A faulty ABS system is far from an indication of a vehicle that's at the end of its life. $1k in repairs is not "thousands." You seem to enjoy making up your own facts. Good day!
3
Finally! The more I watch this guy work on vehicles the more I'm convinced he's a sloppy mechanic putting on a show for youtube. Notice that he also omitted the reassembly of the lower hose where he used the grinder/cutter. It also baffles me that he uses a power tool to tighten bolts into plastic parts.
3
@williameldridge9382 . I wasn't aware that releasing air bubbles from the system was called burping. This should be common sense. But then we'll never know if our boy Ray performed this process or simply cut some corners, handed off the vehicle to the customer and moved on.
2
@scamazonprime . You clearly failed math if you think $1k in repairs that might allow a vehicle to last another year or two is more than the cost of a new vehicle. Enjoy living in fantasy land!
2
@scamazonprime . You conveniently leave the cost of a new vehicle out of your equation. Keep living in fantasy land.
2
@Chlorate299 . A car payment for a new van is $400-$500 per month in addition to higher insurance cost. That's $5k-$6k per year. How do you figure $1k is more than the cost of a new vehicle? Use your tiny brain for once in your life!
2
@scamazonprime . First, you changed the entire argument with a different repair cost. Second, why would someone trade in one clunker for another? If you're going to drive a vehicle into the ground with 300k miles you should upgrade to something new with warranty. However, we already stated that $1k to repair an ABS system is in no way an indication of a vehicle at the end of its life. I think we've had enough of you. Good day!!
2
Damn bro! That was amazing! I would have taken all day to do that same job. Love watching this kind of stuff! Cheers!
2
@garyr7027 . Ok. Then no. This type of bearing is sealed so no other seals are needed.
2
@colesteven1123 . Good one! haha
2
300k miles is a lot so I understand why they don't want to drop that kind of money into the vehicle. But my philosophy is that as long as I can keep my old clunker running and the repair cost doesn't exceed the cost of a new vehicle its worth it to me. Often, when people decide to trade their old cars they neglect the cost of the new vehicle in their decision making.
2
@Mdudeman13 . Interesting. Thanks!
2
ok
2
He had the control arm or knuckle hanging by the brake line. This is an absolute NO from me.
2
Yes, there is splash guard that goes in the back of the hub to prevent debris from getting into the wheel bearing hub/assembly.
1
@FlameG102 . Agreed. Cheers!
1
@Mavendow . You really think the shop is going to replace the radiator with no labor charges?? GTFOH!
1
@ggariepy . The radiator is literally held together by two bolts and a couple of hoses? Are you implying that mechanics are some kind of geniuses and no one else can do what they do? GTFOH!
1
@gott2641 . You got that right! Most people would rather sit on their rears and eat Cheetos while watching garbage on the tv.
1
@Mavendow . Call you local shop and find out. You think because they are only two bolts and two hoses attached to it that they are going to charge you less than 2 hours of labor for replacement?? If the customer is lucky he only gets charged for one hour since Ray had to remove the bolts already. Fool!
1
@Mavendow . Then you know the shop didn't replace the radiator without charging at least 1 hour of labor. Good day!
1
That sucks!
1
Intro is a little dramatic. I hope you changed it.
1
I think all modern cars have radiator caps designed to release excess air pressure.
1
That's crazy! Looking forward to this series!
1
That's crazy!! People like this shouldn't be allowed to legally own a car.
1
That Kmart torque wrench probably has a 10%+ accuracy variance. lol
1
This has easily become my favorite automotive channel. Cheers!
1
Unbelievable!!! People who allow their cars to deteriorate like this should not be legally allowed to drive. WTF!!
1
@Austin O'Brien . Can confirm. I moved to MA from TX and it pissed me off that I needed to buy a new catalytic converter to pass inspection. They checked everything but that was the only thing I needed.
1
I don't know how you can work with that annoying music in the background.
1
Do you mean fully assemble hubs? They cost more. A quality bearing like in the video will cost between $50 and $75. An assembled bearing with hub will be in the hundreds.
1
Nice job on this one!
1
Very interesting video but the music is downright irritating. Please ask your boss to turn down the music.

I don't think you need a lift for most jobs (maybe none) but having a good tool collection including power tools makes all the difference. The key is to be safe, know how to diagnose your car, and have a service/repair manual if you're not sure what to do. Of course, if you have power tools and a lift the better but not necessary. You should try getting a OBDII scanner and learn to work with computer codes to troubleshoot your car.
1
@thewizzard3150 . I'm not proposing to tighten fasteners with power tools but some power tools today come with auto stop feature when the fastener reaches certain torque. The idea of using a power tool is to make the job easier on the person and possibly prevent injury due to overexertion. In fact, the one thing I dislike about this channel is that the guy doesn't use torque wrenches which is a disgrace to his profession regardless of how much experience he has. His gut isn't an accurate measure of torque.
1
@thewizzard3150 . I bet! I'm just a DIYer looking to learn as much as I can so I watch this channel. But I've been working on personal vehicles long enough (20+ years) to know right from wrong in many situations. Thanks for the replies! Cheers!
