Great comment! Its hard for modern players to understand the genius of Fischer because today even a beginner can use an engine to point out the best moves. I would argue even elite players take for granted the tools the have when they judge players of the past.

@J.c410 . You said it yourself. "Modern way of training with computer." Give Fischer the same tools and let's see what happens. You won't be standing so confidently anymore.

Great point of view. However, Fischer should also be in the discussion for best career. His career didn't start with this championship win in '72. Look up Fischer's historic records, many which still stand today, and his contributions to the game in general. You'll quickly see Fischer is easily one of the GOATs no matter how you look at it.

@flavio7180 . Clearly, you know very little about chess and boxing.

The GOAT! Although Fischer is still my all time favorite! Cheers!

You're confusing popularity vs skill. If you want to vote on popularity maybe Nimzo should be included since he wrote one of the most influential chess books ever. But then, I never heard Nimzo being included in any GOAT conversation.

@billj4525 . Generations from now Carlsen and he's so called computer era will be forgotten while Morphy and Fischer will continue to be in GOAT discussions.

Karpov ahead of Fischer? Not leading up to the '75 match. Delusional!

@julianc691 . Don't forget Morpheus. I mean Morphy. lol

@hliang4 . Tal was a great player but not a contender for a GOAT discussion.

No other champion had the influence on chess that Fischer had even with this short longevity as a champ. Sorry, Hikaru, you're wrong on this one.

@Wtahc . The point is that there is an argument to be made that the best GMs are the ones that know how to use today's engines, databases, and AI the best as opposed to players of the past that had to rely on their own analysis and magazine/newspaper clips. Even so, today in 2023, Fischer's elo peak is still the 21 highest elo rating ever. Let that sink in for a while.

@Wtahc . You completely ignored my comment. AI is just a tool like shovel or a hammer. The one that uses it best gets best results. There is no reason to believe that chess players won't continue getting stronger at various rates which leads to rating gaps.

@Wtahc . I'm rated 2300+ online and I'm not about to read a novel of a response. Bottom line is that today's players rely heavily on memorized engine lines. Give players like Fischer and Morphy the same tools and watch them obliterate today's GMs. I've been playing and consuming chess for many years - likely many times longer than you've been playing. Today's players aren't better than players of the past. They just have better tools and use knowledge discovered by players of the past. Good day!

@Wtahc . Sure you are. I bet you have matches with Danya and Hikaru all the time. You lost all credibility. GTFH.
