  5. Seems that Russia wasn't going to hold on to Alaska especially when it became known that the land was rich in natural resources. The discovery of natural resources would have only sparked a war for control of the territory.

  9. Wow! This was incredibly educational! I never knew any of this. The American generals and forces were some bad asses going into unknown land and outright taking over. However, much respect to the Mexicans for fighting it out till the end. I realize that many Mexicans deserted but I don't think we can blame them based on the conditions in which they were fighting. Awesome mini documentary! Thank you!

  17. Look up Puerto Rico's struggle for independence since the US colonized the island. Puerto Rico has never been free since the Spanish arrived in 1493. At the end of The Spanish-American War Puerto Ricans wanted independence but the US refused to grant them freedom. In fact, the US made it ILLEGAL for Puerto Ricans to display their own national flag (look up "law 53" or "La Ley de Mordaza") and appointed governors until 1948 when Luiz Muñoz Marin became the first democratically elected governor. The Spanish American war ended in 1898 when the US colonized Puerto Rico but didn't grant them citizenship until 1917. In 1922 Puerto Ricans were fed up with the US and established the Nationalist Party. Look up Pedro Albizu Campos (Harvard graduate) to learn more about Puerto Rican efforts to win their independence. In 1954 many Puerto Ricans still wanted their independence as 4 Puerto Ricans took up arms in US Capitol Hill (Washington DC) where they unfurled a Puerto Rican flag and opened fire. 5 members of Congress where wounded. There is also the Jones Act which makes it difficult for Puerto Ricans to trade with foreign nations and is partly to blame for Puerto Rico's poor economy. However, to most Puerto Ricans all of this is just history as, today, they have been brainwashed to obey their masters and accept their fate. That's Puerto Rico for you.

Americans like to think they are above the rest of the world but put us anywhere else in the world and we would be just another country fighting it out with our neighbors. As an American, I really hate how ignorant and self centered we have become as a society.

  20. Wow!! In all my years going to church I never learned about any of this. I even attended different denominations which never mentioned any of this. Heads of state use religion to validate their policies. Take modern day Russia, for example, who's leader is validated by the church in his violent destruction of neighboring countries. Before that, we had the crusades. It goes to show that religions are only hell bent in acquiring power and controlling the masses. Years ago I began to question the validity of a god or higher being and concluded that there is no such thing. Still, only now I'm learning about this great schism.

  22.  @jonathanviera1589  . I just looked this up again and it seems to me that you're incorrect. The Jones Act specifically states that trading BETWEEN US shipping ports must be done by US ships. However, the Jones Act DOES NOT forbid direct foreign trade to Puerto Rico. Please show a valid source if you insist that PR can't trade directly with international partners. In fact, it turns out that PR has trade agreements with 21 other countries across Latin America, Asia, Europe, and even the Middle East! But yes, its true that the Jones Act does inflate the cost of imports to Puerto Rico because the island is not accessible via land making imports that go through the US first more expensive.

  28. Odd video. As a Texan I learned some interesting facts but far too much was left out and you mischaracterized Texas as a poor state when Californians are moving in droves to Texas as we speak. This video needs to be at least twice as long with better explanations of the relationships between all parties involved, the Mexican-American war, and secession. Also, no mention of the Comanches natives. One of your weakest videos for sure.

  43. My understanding is that under the Jones Act Puerto Rico can engage in international commerce but foreign ships may not cross from port to port within US territories or the mainland. That is different from what you said.
