  1. Splitting of hairs here. The crucial point is NOT of intent, but impact. (1) the Chinese projects do not transfer capability or technology to the host country (2) the Chinese LOANS take out more than they invest (3) the African countries do not have bargaining power vs. China. (4) the claim that the review of 100 project documents revealed no ill intent is bunk. Who seriously thinks a debt trap intent will be formalized on paper? (5) factual inaccuracies abound- Rajpaksha airport is NOT in Africa. It’s in Sri Lanka (6) The net beneficiary of these projects is China. China is on to the weakness of third world democracies: leaders are corrupt, and popularism— shiny new malls and railway lines— gets the leaders reelected. These leaders are not incentivized to press for their own nation’s best interests. The IMPACT is of a trap. Via debt. Whence the term “debt trap”.

  2.  @gloryxiong6068  🙏🏽 I am afraid I am biased. With first hand experience of Chinese government’s kindness in Tibet, and personal exposure to the machinations at Hambantota, I cannot wish the Chinese government well. That said, I learn a lot from, respect, and even love the people, culture, and the country.
