@Pain9682 exactly. it depends on a lot of factors. how fast you're going, how long is the trip, how much you're opening the windows, and how hot it is outside. also if you have big windows, glass roof, ac is working much harder to maintain temperature. if outside temp gets close or over your body temperature, so high 90's, the more air gets in, the hotter you get. driving long distance on the highway with broken ac and 100+ F REALLY sucks trust me. but if you consider comfort/gallon AC clearly wins unless outside temp is nice

@matthewmiller3392 it's "free" only if you have a mild hybrid that will use Regen to charge the 48v battery. on the highway on cruise control, coasting will only happen downhill

also if you have 4 windows all the way down and going 45mph it's not going to be more efficient than AC set at reasonable temp

@h8GW the funny (sad?) part is all these people driving trucks with empty beds that they use once in a blue moon, complaining about gas price, and trying to save 1 mpg with the tailgate position. because most people are not moving 4x8s on a daily basis. Funny thing is Americans think they need to pay people to cook for them, refill their glass, file their taxes, walk their dogs, mow their lawn,etc..but he'll everyone needs his own truck because he's maybe going to build his own house all by himself ', and haul all that hundreds of tons of materials back and forth from home Depot. get real, you're gonna pay someone to do it too 🤣🤣🤣

@Bangin0utWest that's not the only effect of Eco mode. pedal/throttle curve is usually changed too even though most people will just press the pedal harder..btw lower rpm is not always better for fuel economy. for every speed / load there's an optimum gear / throttle body position / amount of gas. hybrids with ecvt are usually highly optimized for efficiency and can select exactly the best gear ratio. it's very surprising how even in eco mode, those hybrids will rev quite high every time you smash the throttle. it's also disturbing if you're not used to it, even more if you drive manuals.

@Insanias meaning don't fart!

@lawofliberty3517 yep air drag is THE single most important factor for highway mpg. of course with the engine efficiency but you can change that by rolling your windows or turning ac on/off. that's why it's very surprising to experience better mpg with windows down. having driven I95 I can tell 55mph is not very likely unless you wanna get blown past by semis/truck hauling boats. I've seen people tow huge boats 80-90mph in strong rain storm with almost zero visibility 🙄 also rolling down your windows in the summer in Florida is like blowing steam to your face.

@jonbar140 sure there is not one magical speed that works for every vehicle

@CalgarGTX what kind of progress ?
1
@lawofliberty3517 there are a lot of factors at play that can influence mpg more than AC. speed/traffic/wind..he could have faulty AC too. don't forget in most case windows down won't give you the same temperature/comfort as AC if you compare slightly opening the windows vs AC at full blast, You might have better mog without AC but it doesn't mean anything

@hughmccann7701 it looks like you are hypermiling, which could explain why you are getting way better mileage with a manual. it's is very uncommon to get better mileage in town than on highway, wether it's an auto or manual, but manual give you more control for hypermiling also automatics progressively got as good or better than manual with lock up converter, planetary gears/getting more and more speeds, ECU controlling the shifts etc so comparing manual and automatic you must also consider the age and technologies used by automatic. PS sorry I just realized I misread manual being more efficient than auto in town, not more efficient than on the highway. torque converter wastes heat when starting from a stop, but so do clutches. torque converter should be locked up 99.9% of the time, even during shifts. except in stop/go/idle traffic

@hughmccann7701 yep it's pretty much the opposite with new transmissions they're pretty much locked all the time except from a stop, like a sequential transmission or dct,also with more gears an better ECU in eco mode they can be almost in the most efficient gear so they can make up for having slightly more drag, except if you are hyper milling with a manual also due to emissions tests manuals are sometimes geared too long, harming performance without really improving real world mileage while automatics get launch control, so automatics are getting better and manual somehow worse. some get improvements like rev matching but also rev hang can make them less fun to drive. I'll still pick manual any day...except maybe if driving only around town

rear spoiler do reduce drag if they are properly designed, like basically any OEM spoiler. especially on hatchback/SUVs etc

@Nefariousrouge it would be possible if the device had enough processing power/memory, plus access to low level parameters / sensors through OBD to run some self optimizing software. but definitely not at this price/size/weight. anyway it's more likely that the engineers did a better job on the factory tune

@Bangin0utWest hybrid is just an example to show that depending on the load, the highest gear (lowest shifting point) is not always the most efficient one. it's the same for higher performance engines, low shift points are only "eco" if you're feathering the throttle.
