@electrictroy2010 it could always use the CVT when you are accelerating very softly like some automatic transmissions in eco mode will do in 2nd gear, when you you need very little torque. even the less efficient CVT could be more efficient at low loads by using lower rpm and better thermal efficiency

@terathelos9446 when driving , constantly adjusting the ratio would be much more work than using a manual and unless you have a lot of practice, you would probably be much worse at doing it than an ECU. but in some circumstances like in long downhills to tune the level of engine braking, on the highway, if you wanna lock in top gear to cruise and be able to roll on the torque for a smooth and progressive acceleration,sounds like it could be useful.
