what about combining free valve, cylinder deactivation and 5 stroke. for instnce you take an inline 4. you have you tradiotional 4 cylinder 4stroke cycle when you need max load. when load falls around 60% you deactivate the two inner cylinders and use them as fifth strokes for the outer cylinders. youre making 50% power forn the outer cylinders and the inner ones recuperate maybe 10% additional. you can keep using the engine at high load, with almost no pumping loss, and the thermal efficiency is higher. when you fall around 30%, you deactivate 3 cylinders, you have a single power stroke, and up to 3 successive stages of expanding the exhaust gases
