I've never wanted someone to die more. That poor man. I don't blame the doctors for carrying out what they believed was the man's wish, and it's hard to blame the family for clinging to hope. But if only the family had been able to see his suffering through that hope sooner.

@vc34-00 My wife works in end-of-life healthcare (but is not a nurse). She spends most of her time talking through end-of-life plans, quality of life, etc. and is instructed to make it VERY clear what people are signing up for when they request extraordinary life-saving measures. I wasn't there, and I don't know what the medical team told this man, but if it was "Hang in there, keep fighting" (as it sounds like it was), rather than a frank and realistic discussion of what keeping fighting could mean, then he was done a terrible disservice, even if it came from a good place. Weighing quality vs. quantity of life really needs to be a primary focus.

@Yu h There are likely cultural factors at play too. I don't know where Yu H is from, but it's likely there are some places where it is very true that doctors can't let a patient die in there care. Here in the US, it is up to the patient whether or not they can be kept alive using extreme measures. In other places, euthanasia may be more accepted (I don't know this for sure, but I know it's been a topic considered in many places.)

@yuh6840 Ah, here we go: per Wikipedia, "As of 2022, euthanasia is legal in Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and all six states of Australia (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia).*
