  3. 1. Yeah, she's young and still operating under the working hard == success mindset. There are some cringe moments as a direct result of that. 2. Otherwise, she's totally right and good on her for seeing it coming and calling them out. 3. Their inability to provide consistent and satisfactory responses indicates that a.) something shady is going on and possibly b.) that HR doesn't know what it is and are in a terrible position themselves.

  4. I dont like Go (at least, compared to Rust), and I have had a hard time articulating why. I was kind of afraid it was because of something dumb like "not feeling smart," but I think the reason is actually because I dont feel like I'm learning. Maybe that's a better way for Theo to think of it too? In Go, when I got stuck, it was because of Go mod and some weird protobuf idiosyncracies; little oddball one-off implementation goof-ups that made me better at Go, but nothing else. When I get stuck in Rust, I end up learning about allocation inneficiencies and efficient programming patterns, and I feel like I'm better even at writing JS (even if it makes me hate it more ..)

  8. re: rolling your own auth -- I did the same when I was just a hobbyist. Not hard at all, and I'd rather spend time learning the fundamentals than the idiosyncracies of some service like cognito.

  17. I've really gotten them to keyboards the last couple of years. The problem is they're so expensive and I just don't have much time. So I've gone all this time thinking I hate clicky switches... And then I finally got to try my coworkers. And I love it. So now I need to get another keyboard and get clicky switches and drive my wife crazy.

  18. PSA: If you like Svelte, like web components, but dislike React style and/or Lit, you can actually very easily compile Svelte components to web components . It's not the best documented thing in the world but once you have it up and running it's actually pretty handy

  19. Update now that I've listened to the whole thing.. this method does get a brief shout-out in the article, but there are concerns about maintainability. I DO get not wanting to be tied to an ecosystem and being concerned that framework updates will break your web components, but I do think this issue is largely mitigated by virtue of Svelte outputting actual web components instead that are just JavaScript, HTML, and CSS with no dependency on Svelte itself. That and Svelte is mostly just JavaScript with templating and reactivity, so there is no radically different syntaxes or functions (as of 4.x).

  31.  @kyjo72682  Yes, but that's presuming a the AI can "reason," my point being that I think ascribing reasoning capabilities to AI in its current state is defining "reasoning" and "agency" too loosely. But it may be difficult to tell when we cross that barrier, and you're right that we're moving toward a situation where there may not be an off button. Right now, you turn off the servers powering the thing -- by and large, people aren't running LLMs locally (though you can), and they are pretty much contained to the machine they are on and dependent on a large power source, so it would be easy to tell if they "go viral." But it may not be like that forever.

  37.  @godowskygodowsky1155  accounted for. I get the perspective, and in mission-critical software, yeah -- know what you're doing or be safe. But you don't get to know what you're doing without doing it, and I'm not a fan of relying on a few people maintaining all the world's implementations of a simple thing any programmer can learn. Like, even form inputs... My client got cheap labor knowing I was green, and I got to figure out how to implement forms and fight spammers. I made honeypot submit buttons, wrote a pretty effective spam filter, and integrated captchas. It's not the best, but it works for that implementation. And you know what? It doesn't seem like magic anymore.

  40. I endeavored to learn vim (and customizing my Linux distro) over the holidays (at night, after the family was asleep) and honestly am just now getting a decent vim setup put together. I've really enjoyed vim and I feel like I'm getting better, but I decided to install vim motions for VSCode on my work laptop today and honestly had the least productive day I've ever had. I know the more I use them the better I'll get, but I had to disable the plugin for my 3pm meeting because I was fumbling around so much, and I don't really see myself re-enabling it until I've put a few more miles on vim on my home computer. I feel like vim motions in vim are WAY easier than vim motions in VSCode, though, and that Code behaves rather unpredictably at times. Like, 80% of the time I had to undo a paste command because it didn't properly yank the text I said to yank, so I was mixing d's and y's with ctrl-c's and v's. It was a mess.

  45. Putting aside all the important apects of the Rabbit discussion, i find it really interesting that AI is so good at solving Captchas and nobody is freaking out about it and Captchas are still a thing.
