Everything is relative with what is going on in present time. My loans were around 25k. Why so high...living expenses! The dorms were first come first serve. Supply and demand = price. Rent was huge back then as was gas and food. Government should not pay off anyone's debt. If they go for student loans why not va mortgage loans or car loans, etc. You sign a contract for the debt. The taxpayer didn't sign up for your loan.
