Being upset about there not being pedestrian shortcuts, bike lanes, and that sort of thing is a very modern concept and people talk about it like is a crisis. For hundreds of years there were just roads with no designated separate paths for walking, biking, using draft animals, or driving. Every place grew from its legacy right of ways that are today's arterial roads, it is just that cars turned out to be dominant now making it seem to people who lack the historical perspective that other forms of travel are deliberately excluded. In old days people had to walk dozens of miles to merchants, taverns, churches, schools, county seats, and occasionally the blockhouse to shelter from indians. The majority of people will never willfully go back to that. Urban mass transit doesn't have much history older than the 1850s and almost nobody ever had a horse.
