Hey Prime why don't you make the experiment trying to get job interviews with your resume and you will see how terrible it is so you will stop talking nonsense. You can make future vlogs about the experiment.

To all that don't know how hard is the current job market. I am 45 yo and have 20+ years of experience mostly in java and after sending 100+ job applications I got just 3 interviews and ZERO job offers. My friend also with 20+ years of experience sent 500+ applications and got only around 10 interviews and ZERO job offers. We both have CS degrees.

@MusaMuhammadKhan I was targeting normal and senior positions and I reduced my hourly rate by 35% since my 2022 rate. Agents like my low rate and they are glad to send my application to companies. Unfortunately companies have so many applications that I hardly get an interview.

Yes 23 years ago when I graduated from CS I could get a job as programmer everywhere. Now after searching for a year and with more than 20+ years of experience after sending 100+ applications I got ZERO job offers. Times for programmers were never so terrible as they are now. I could always get a job quite easily even in 2009 after financial crisis. Today it is close to impossible.
9
@RandomNoob1124 It is not a fraud because I am in the same boat as he is with 20 years of experience.
9
To all "smart" a... I can tell you that am 45 years old and have 20+ years of experience in programming (mostly java) I sent 100+ applications and got 3 interviews and ZERO job offers! My friend with 20+ years of experience sent 500+ applications got around 10 interviews and ZERO job offers.
8
I also have 20 years of experience in software development and I am looking for a job for more than a year now and after sending 100+ applications I got only 3 interviews and ZERO job offers. I am thinking of changing my profession at least until the market improves.
7
@TerryJulianLive yes I also get linkedin offers from agents but those are worthless because I cannot get the job interviews. Try getting interviews from those offers and you will see how worthless they are.
7
I am quite concerned about the demand and supply of programmers in the next 5 years. If there will be too many programmers competing for too few jobs then salaries will go way down and it is going to be hard to get a job even for much lower salary than you can get now.
7
I asked most of my friends and ex coworkers that work as programmers or managers (many are currently searching too) and I got just 2 interviews from that and ZERO job offers despite I have CS degree and 20+ years of programming experience mostly in java.
6
@asdfasdfasdf1218 I agree. He might get some offers just because he is a rather famous youtuber so it would be better if he would help someone with average experience getting a job.

I worked for an IT company that was hiring people just to fire them for fun and I was one of the victims. Later I met many that had the same terrible experience of working hard and yet they got fired after 6 months having no clue why. When you do everything they say fast and you do a good job - they have zero complains and then they just fire you saying that you are incompatible or such similar BS and they did this to many before you and after you leave the job. Even the now richest woman in my city was their victim approximately the same time I was there 20 years ago.

@Jak132619 Most people including you think that unit tests should be small and integration tests are of medium size. This is a total nonsense. Unit tests can be large and larger than integration test. The difference is not in size. The difference is in what they test. Unit tests shouldn't go beyond the process boundaries to outside processes like database, filesystem or network. The main job of integration tests is to test integration of our system with outside systems. So you are not doing TDD with integration tests but with larger unit tests and this is better than TDD with tiny unit tests. You should actually delete unit tests that are too small when they are properly tested as part of larger unit tests.
3
Great videos! We live in a crazy world where critical thinking like this is rare. Never trust anyone or anything that only lists the pros without the cons. I believe TDD is good BUT only in some specific cases like when you know exactly the inputs and outputs to a rather complex function. In many cases where you don't know what exactly you want and so you are exploring the possibilities or when output is random or when building GUI in code or when applying a boilerplate code you shouldn't waste your time on a silly unit test because usually there is no benefit of having such a test and even less of writing it before the production code.
3
But the market is terrible right now for getting the job. I applied for more than 100 jobs as a programmer and got only one short job interview and I have more than 20 years of experience in programming and my expected salary is lower than it was 3 years ago - before the inflation.
3
Even nepotism didn't help me. It is that hard.
3
@neruneri good point. Still I think the job market will improve someday by a lot so we will all be able to get decent jobs.
2
@SandraWantsCoke What city? Do you need a good Java developer there? I will give you a good price since I only speak basic German.
2
@BrazilMentionedHueHue I applied to onsite, remote and hybrid offers.
2
When you said "never mocker" I pressed the subscription button and I have just around 10 subscribed channels after using youtube more than 10 years.
2
@davew2040x great idea instead of providing them bad unit tests with mock we should just provide them some irrelevant metrics.
2
@RandomNoob1124 I was a java programmer - contractor working for different companies. I could always get the contract job. Now it is unbelievable hard.
2
You should know that TDD doesn't produce good designs only mediocre. To get to good designs you should redesign after every large increase of code size. Beside many "small" unit tests created by TDD are just useless and you should delete them.
2
I urged Dave Farley to stop promoting the mockist unit tests many times and he just don't get it how bad they are. He told me that a huge system he was programming and is full of mocked tests is very successful...
1
The first time is hard. Then it gets easier.
1
@КалоянИлиев-я9т My friend sent 500+ applications. I sent around 120. Beside Java I have professional experience with C, C++, C#, PHP and javascript working for some of the largest companies in the world.
1
@SandraWantsCoke I am looking for a job in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia.
1
@InfiniteQuest86 I didn't talk about offers from recruiters. I want to get offers from companies that decided to hire me - the final yes from them. I get some offers from recruiters but much less than I use to get and they are worthless because when I reply to them that I am interested in the job I don't hear from them anymore because their customers are not interested in having interview with me.
1
@SandraWantsCoke I only speak basic German. Maybe this is the reason why I didn't get more interviews but in the past language wasn't the problem and also my friend speaks German perfectly and after sending 500+ applications he still couldn't get the job. I also couldn't get a job in my country Slovenia after sending around 10 applications. Where are you coming from?
1
@RandomNoob1124 It is you who is lying and pretending that you know me when you have no clue about me.
1
@playea123 I am applying mostly for Java programmer where my experience matches closely to what they are looking for.
1
@Theaverageazn247 Where did you find the job?
1
@smnomad9276 I worked way too long for lousy salary in Slovenia where work of engineers is worthless. Then I started to work for DACH region as an contractor and I earned really good money for few years but that opportunity is gone now.
1
@eduantech the point is that even getting the interviews in the DACH region is very hard. It was much easier few years ago. I can get interviews easier in Slovenia but salary here is pathetic. In Slovenia it is more profitable to work as a waiter than as programmer.
1
@smnomad9276 In 2014 I created a mobile app for Android an Ios and I got only around 100 downloads without marketing. I didn't know how to market my the app. The hardest thing is not to develop something but to acquire customers that can give you revenue and I have zero experience in that. To have decent chance in succeeding you should have someone that knows a lot about marketing and at least 10k in budget just for marketing expenses.
1
@BrazilMentionedHueHue Guys great news! You are all hired to work for me! Your salary will be ZERO but hey you can say that it is easy to get a job in the IT - just don't tell them your salary. LOL!
1
@Th3T1redPanda yea Germans can be quite silly when they start complicating things. I agree that they want at least C1 but my friend is C2 in German and still couldn't get the job after 500 applications and around 10 interviews. I guess because he is not living in Germany. They want the language and residency in Germany.
1
@Leonhart_93 I am applying at big and smaller companies.
1
WARNING Casey Muratori replaced division with multiplication to get a huge speed boost over clean code solution that used division!
1
@GamingGeek9000 OMG you just described my country Slovenia that is part of EU. Here they love inexperienced developers that work for the minimal wage and they don't want experienced so we can only go to other countries where they appreciate good developers.
1
@vladimirkraus1438 here is Slovenia they want inexperienced developers for peanuts. Experienced must go to western Europe or work for peanuts too.
1
I was fired two times despite I worked hard and good and they told me that I am good they still fired me and it was devastating for me until I got a job with huge pay and real appreciation for my by top developers. This is why I hate to work in my stupid country - "socialist" Slovenia and I love to work just across the border in the capitalist Austria.
1
What is the difference between unit tests and integration tests?
1
I would love to see ThePrime debate Dave on mockist style unit tests. Mockist style unit tests are the biggest nonsense ever invented and quite often used on many projects.
1
Great critique of SOLID!
1
@markonovakovic3838 The most overlooked advice about how to properly do the TDD is advice on deleting useless tests and I believe this is the main reason why TDD is just not that great in practice. Look what inventor of TDD Kent Beck did in his famous book. He deleted the testFrancMultiplication test because he wrote larger tests that fully covered the functionality of this smaller test. There is no proper TDD without deleting useless tests.
1
NO NO NO! Unit is NOT one function nor one class. Unit is not a piece of code. Unit is a unit of functionality (1 functionality) that can be implemented by one or many functions or one or many classes. We test private methods by calling public methods that call those private methods. Most people are wrong because they think unit tests should be small. Usually small unit tests are bad because they don't test much. Medium and large unit tests are much more useful and the code they test is much easier to refactor. Now go to your projects and delete those tiny unit tests that test less than 5 lines of code.
1
@retropaganda8442 I have 20 years of experience and I know a guy with 25 years of experience and we both have hard time getting a job as a software engineers. I sent 100+ applications and he sent 500+ applications.
1
@Lazlo-os1pu don't speculate. Try getting a job now and you will see we are telling the truth. It is smart to stay in touch with the market anyway by periodically trying to get a better paying job. Send at least 20 applications and then tell us how many interviews and offers you got.
1
@RandomNoob1124 please try to get a job in the current market and you will see how silly are your comments.
