The Dacia 1300, from 1973, is a Renault 12. Very very popular in Australia in the 70's. Rode well on our bad roads - that magic French suspension. Were made here or put together here via CKD - Complete Knock Down. Last forever. Feels like driving a large car. Came in awesome pastel colours like our famous Kingwood's and Falcons and Valiants. Until lead was banned. The same car was sold in Turkey under a Turkish car maker. Lada sold the Samara and little 4wd Niva here in Australia. The Niva being very durable. Peter Brock even was involved with a version of the Samara. Can see on YouTube on Australian car adverts/research.

Renault also collaborates with Mitsubishi and partly owns Nissan. I "think" they "rescued" Nissan in the 90's. They also own 80% of Samsung Motors. Until Stellantis came along, Renault with it's trucks etc, was I think in the top 3 in Europe, along with the VW Audi group and the Fiat group. Opel: German and Vauxhall: UK - were GM's divisions in Europe. Share cars. Where our Holden Commodore originated from and many other rebadged Holdens. PSA - Peugeot/Citroen bought them out in 2017. GM getting rid of foreign brands, including Holden, SAAB and internally: Pontiac and Oldsmobile ( I love the sound of the word: Oldsmobile - just right for a car 😂 ), and prior: Saturn and Geo. GM still owns Daewoo. Not sure what their connection to Isuzu and Suzuki is now ? The new Chevrolet Colorado smaller Ute/truck won't be a rebadged Isuzu this time - solely GM - but looks great. Since Peugeot bought Opel, it finally in its first year or two made a profit, which GM's couldn't achieve. Going electric.

It's Renault's cheap brand - suppose to be coming to Australia - but I'll believe when I see it - crash safety concerns. DAF cars have a connection to Volvos. They also were one of the first to have a CVT transmission ( you might have one in your Subaru ? ) An Aussie adventurer, named Alby Mangles, famous for going on raw trips to far flung places with very little and making them into films, discovered one of these little DAF cars in Africa, and they took it everywhere and even repaired the transmission. Africa, South America, Russia, the Middle East and ex Soviet Union countries often have car companies that you may never have heard of - and get started by buying the tooling of old discontinued cars and current cars under licence. Most common brands were Fiat and Renault.

Top Gear use to make fun of Dacia's regularly, but did concede that the Duster did look great. They may sell, well, simply because they are cheap and Renault based and easy to repair, get parts and maintain etc. Cars generally getting more expensive, so a market for them. As you said, will probably get better as they are around in the future.
