  2.  @harryfaber  Since the Spitfire Mk IX was basically a Mk V with the newer Merlin 61 engine while the Mk V was a Spitfire Mk I or II with the Merlin 45 engine in place of the Merlin III, I would say that there is much in common. The P 51 D of 1944 did not have the acceleration, climb or maneuverability of the 1942 Spitfire Mk IX. The Spitfire MK IX also beat the Me 262.
