  1.  @MrMarinus18  Ther Merlin engine didn't stall, in fact the problem of negatice G was much reduced by the Battle of Britain and didn't worry RAF pilots, another fact is the Merlin engine was more efficient than the DB 601, drop tanks might have helped but the Bf 109 would run out of cannon ammunition in a few seconds and either have to make do with just two machine guns or head home to rearm.

  3.  @WilhelmKarsten  The P 80 had a higher accident rate and so did the F 104, the Me 262 was described by an RAF Spitfire pilotas not being much of a threat, they certainly never shot down a single Spitfire.

  7.  @WilhelmKarsten  The Metoer had the very good reliable jet engines while the Me 262 had German failures which led no where. All mogern jet engines come from British designs and none from German failures.

Even though Montgomery was left out of the planning Market Garden nearly succeeded, the failure was that the US 82nd and 101st failed to take their bridges, also the airdrop at Arnhem was poorly planned by Brereton, too far from the bridge and over too many days. XXX Corps advanced on schedule and even made up the time lost at Son en Breugel to arrive at Nijmegan on time only to have to take the town and bridge both of which had been reinforced by the Germans, they could have easily been taken when the 101st arrived, only about 17 troops were defending the bridge and not many the town, Germany had time to bring in hundreds. XXX Corps took both but it delayed them and cost the troops at Arnhem who held out much longer than expected.

  9. In 1940 it was British 100 octane fuel that helped, Britain was producing 100 octane fuel in three refineries from 1938, by the Battle of Britain the RAF had plenty in stock for the whole of 1940. Lend Lease did not start for about another year.

  11. Market Gardne wasn't Montgomery's plan, he was excluded from the planning and his misgivings were ignored. Eisenhower insisted it go ahead.

  12.  @lllordllloyd  Funny how the US failed to take Gherbourg, Brest and any other port in France, Montgomery did take Antwerp intact ahead of schedule, the Scheldt estuary was never going to be easy, hard to attack, easy to defend, it was taken and Antwerp in use by November 1944 Market Garden which was not Mongomery's plan did take a chunk of land.

  16.  @wanderschlosser1857  The fact that the Spitfire wing by design had a high speed capability, even in a dive early Spitfires were very fast, other fighters of the time couldn't reach the same speeds and remain under control. Maybe the fact that the Spitfire had a safe mach limit of mach 0.86 at which speed the Me 262 would break up,

  18. garyseesnothing. British high octane fuel certainly helped in 1940 but the Spitfire was never slow, it was the best performing fighter from the start to the end of the war only beaten for a short time in 1942.

  19.  @WilhelmKarsten  The obsolete centrifugal jet engine was the best way to go, axial flow took longer to get working well, the Germans never managed to, the French took a German design and had to make so many changes that they could have started from scratch and done a better job, all new engines owe their existance to the British. the best jet engines until the 1950's were British centrifugal jet engines, the Gnome, Derwent, Nene and Tay, the best axial flow engines in the 1950's were British, the RR Avon, and Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire.

  27.  @WilhelmKarsten  We had already got rid of surplus German pilots so at least we had some to spare. We developed the ejection seat which has saved many lives over the years, I recall a German attempt, the pilot ejected ok but was found dead in the seat because he lost both arms and couldn't do anything but make a heavy landing in his seat.

Funy how Montgomery didn't fail in Sicily, he gave Patton th eeasy road and took on the best of the Germans and most of their armour much like Normandy, Patton shouted a lot there too and it was Patton who was removed from command. As for Market Garden Patton had his slow advance of 50 miles over 3 months, he didn't need to be ordered to stop. At the time of Faiaise Montgomery was taking on much more and Patton stoppped, I understood Bradley ordered him to stop there because Patton if he had kept going would have ground to a halt anyway as he so often did.

  36. No real point The RAF had Spitfires and Tempests which were more than a match for any fighter including the Me 262 and Meteors were sent over Germany and not a single Luftwaffe fighter came up to fight.

  38.  @2lotusman851  Very good for escorting RAF and USAAF bombers and capable of doing so into Germany if it was needed. Also better against the Zero than other fighters, the Zero couldn't take on a Spitfire as long as the Spitfire pilot maintained speed, the Zero turned tight at low speed but not well as speed went up.

  40.  @johnnunn8688  The Me 262 started out with straught wings and a piston engine since the jet engines were not ready, it then had two added jet engines which both failed and by luck still had the piston engine , they changed to different jet engines but these were longer and heavier and shifted the centre of balance back, so rather than a complete redesign they slightly swept the wings back, the funny thing is that it was not enough for any aerodynamic benefit.

  45. Yet XXX Corps didn't fail, in spite of problems they reached Nijmegan on schedule, that was the big failure, Gavin should have taken the lightly defended town and bridge but he went off disobeying orders and akkowed the Germans to bring in reinforcements.

  47.  @RemoteViewr1  The P 38 may have flown in 1939 but it didn't have any active service until 1942 and I doubt very much that it took 90 %f the photos since the RAF never used it but they did use the Mosqutio and Spitfire for photo reconnaissance. The P 38 might have taken 10 %. The USAAF also used Spitfires for photo reconnaissance. the P 38 range may have been 1,300 miles but that was maximum range and the P 38 had a short production run. Hardly a serious bomber. The P 38 needed refining because it was rather a bad design.

  48.  @GreatPolishWingedHussars  Many British pilots flew Hurricanes as well and the Polish squadron 303 had about the same numbers as other squadrons. true numbers help rather than the very high claims, I go by what a Polish historian said and it was backed up by other Polish historians.
