Michael Fay. Britain defeated the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, defeated the Italians and Germans in the Mediterranean, defeated both in North Africa and the Germans in the Atlantic, they also defeated the Japanese in Burma. Britain also supplied the USSR and they Supplied the USA with guns and aircraft, in fact the USA did not defeat anyone alone, nor did the USSR.

What was luck? That the RAF were better organised and more professional than the Luftwaffe, that Britain knew how to use radar, that Britain had the Spitfire and Hurricane. I see no luck in that.

Hitler could not finish Britain, he still wanted to at the end of 1940 but he wa unable to do so. Churchill knew at the end of the Battle of Britain that there was little chance of an invasion

Germany prepared for war but they underestimated Britain, they thought all the RAF fighters were based in the South East and they did bomb Southampton and the Supermarine factory which did destroy 3 Spitfires but hardly had any effect on production, they bombed Castle Bromwich and the factory was back in action inside 48 hours. the biggest problem for the Luftwaffe was that the RAF was better organised and they were able to put fighters up in the right place. The Luftwaffe failed at every objective in the Battle of Britain. I doubt any sane person thinks that being invaded would have been better. The Germans would have looted the country and drained the banks just as they did to all occupied countries. How many British would have been murdered as well, and some idiot like you thinks that would be good, get real.

True i missed the comment you were replying to. My mistake.

The Luftwaffe was losing anyway, the attacks on airfields did not work. The RAF was stronger at the end of the Battle of Britain than at the start, the Luftwaffe was weaker.

1. The Luftwaffe tried to take out radar, they failed 2 The Luftwaffe did bomb airfields, they failed. 3 Germany got tied up in the Balkans, Greece and North Africa. The delays and losses of aircraft, tanks and troops cost Germany in the attack on the USSR
3
Michael Fay The luftwaffe had a poor record against British warships especially destroyers. Since the luftwaffe could not beat the RAF it was never going to happen.
2
The biggest problem for Germany was that they had lost too many destroyers in Norway and the Luftwaffe failed against British warships. so if the Germans could somehow miraculously land any significant numbers in Britain they would have very big problems keeping them supplied or what would happen is pockets of Germans running out of supplies and having to surrender. The biggest problem would be getting tanks and heavy guns as well as the ammunition, fuel and even food across the Channel in the first place but then a tank is no good without the crew, ammunition or fuel.
2
The fact is the policy was to take out the bombers and try not to get into fights but in reality the pilots often had to fight and with the Spitfires better climb and altitude performance it was logical for Hurricanes to attack bombers while spitfires held off the fighters but as is so often the case sometimes the roles were reversed, both Hurricanes and Spitfires were capable of defeating Bf 109`s in a turning fight, in fact the bombers were often harder to deal with. Too much is made of poor RAF tactics but the biggest difference between the Germans and British is the British were better at adapting when things were not going right.

Submarines were not ideal for use in the Channel, and I believe Germany did have more than 36 at the start of the war, in fact they had over 40 at sea on 3 September 1939. What Germany lacked for any invasion was transport for troops, tanks and heavy guns, not to forget all the supplies a large invasion would need. Germany lacked destroyers, they had lost too many in Norway. The other big problem for Germany was production, no planning for a long war meant that after losses in Europe the Luftwaffe was unable to keep up with losses in the fighting over Britain, British production in 1940 was much more than German production. Germany did not have sufficient training of new pilots to cope with losses either.

Groovy Ninja. The biggest problem for the Luftwaffe was that they underestimated the RAF, The Luftwaffe tried to destroy radar but failed and they did not even understand how the British radar worked, they did not understand how the RAF fighter control system worked. The Luftwaffe lost badly in 1950 and did not even think about invading USSR until later, as a copy of a message from Hitler to Mussolini right at the end of 1940 points out, Hitlers main priority was still Britain, USSR came to be a priority later and they still got tied up in the Balkans and Greece which delayed the invasion of USSR and then getting tied up in North Africa did not help, the losses reduced the ability of the Germans to fight in USSR
2
buster. No mystery, it is quite simple, the Luftwaffe underestimated the RAF, they did not know how the British radar system worked and they had no idea how the control system worked. The RAF had reserves of fighters right through the battle and they were better at production, better at repairing damaged planes, had better training of new fighter pilots and just were more professional, the luftwaffe was not as professional.

Taking out the radar stations means that only one was off the air for any length of time and a temporary radar station took it`s place very quickly. The RAF were never even close to blind. The Luftwaffe failed to put any important airfield out of action for long at all. I guess this may sound like breaking point. "Two or Three sortees daily was the rule, and the briefing read " Free chase over South-East England" The physical stress as well as the mental strain on the pilots was considerable, the ground personnel and the planes were taxed to the limit ... Failure to achieve any noticable success We saw one comrade after another vanish from our ranks. Not a day passed without place remaining empty at the mess table" The only trouble is that that was from Adolf Galland himself and not an RAF pilot. The so called switch to London meant that the RAF which was still strong simply demolished the Luftwaffe. Absolutely the fighting in the Balkans, Greece and North Africa were later, Germany needed time to recover from the thrashing they got over Britain.

Germany did not want war? They had a funny way of trying not to have war then.
1
The RAF lost quite a lot of planes in the Battle of France too, Germany still had more planes for the Battle of Britain but Germany underestimated the RAF. Britain had stocks of high octane fuel that did not come from USA in 1940 and they also had constant speed props.
1
The RAF had the Gloster Gladiator, Hawker Fury and Hawker Hurricane in 1938, the Gamecock was in service in 1926. The Heyford was not in service as a bomber by 1938, it had been replaced by the Armstrong siddeley Whitworth in 1937, the Vickers wellington came into service in 1938. The Luftwaffe had the earlier slower version of the Bf 109 D, the Bf 110, Do 17 and He 111. The Ju 88 did not enter service until 1939. The Luftwaffe still had biplane fighters in service. The Luftwaffe changed a lot by 1940 too.

Ralphie. Britain were more professional and they used radar and the control system to very good effect. The Luftwaffe underestimated the RAF and that cost them. The Luftwaffe tried to destroy radar and failed, they tried to destroy production and failed, they tried to destroy airfields and failed. Despite having a numerical advantage the Luftwaffe could not win. Germany had several problems, no planning for more than a short war, low production, not enough training of new pilots and the biggest problem was no real idea of how to conduct a war. When things went well the Germans were fine but if anything went wrong they were not able to adapt. Britain had setbacks and they made the most of things and worked through adversity.

RR is still all British, the car division was sold but even they are still made in Britain.
1
The battle of Britain was fought over England, the radar and control system was English and most of the pilots were English, the fighters were designed and built in England. No one forgets the foreign pilots, but we should not forget the English pilots either.
1
Germany had a poor record of sinking destroyers using aircraft and destroyers would be the main type of ship used in the Chanel, Germany had lost too many in Norway.
1
Micky Fay. You are a very ignorant fool. 73 and you have learned nothing in that time.
1
Dicky. The Germans never had a 10 to 1 kill rate, maybe 10 times the number of claims but claims and kills are very different.
1
Paratroops would need a lot of support and where was that going to come from?
