@matthewvincent8971 That must be why the Spitfire was the best fighter of the war, I bet you don't know how much was done to improve the performance of all fighters. try looking up any fighter, the Bf 109 got more powerful engines fromm 1935 when it did all of 272 mph, the Fw 190 didn't perform until it got a newer version of the BMW engine in 1941, the P 51 didn't perform until it got the Merlin engine. Maybe time for you to go back to school.

@StirlingQShagnasty The Germans referred to the P 38 as useless, it was an American author who came up with fork tailed devil in 1957.
3
@musosiimo3199 The 0.5 was much heavier and Britain was already ahead since they decided on 8 machine guns when the US had just 2 x 0.3 machine guns on their fighters, Britain was already looking at going to the 20 mm Hispano which was very much better.

@kingsman3087 The eliptical wing, the P 51 had issues with it's wing.
3
@spanishpeaches2930 The Germans when they lost the Battle of Britain had no pressing needs, score RAF 1 Luftwaffe nil.

Funny how so many thigs that are used as examples of advantages for the Spitfire over Britain which ignore how wel it did over France for the evactuation at Dunkirk or over the channel, then again for Malta and the many paces where the Spitfire performed so well.

@CatWithAOpinion Real Engineering is often not very real or accurate, but they do get some of it right including the turn ability of the Spitfire.
2
@kzrlgo The Spitfire wing had nothing to do with Heinkel, the Bf 109 could only add guns by putting them under the wing, you could go on but why bother, you really don't know much.
2
The groundreaking Spitfire is quite easy to understand and it has nothing to do with being patriotic or not, the Spitfire was well ahead of it's time and remained unmatched right through the war, as said by William Dunne USAAF pilot, no other aircraft was close to perfect as the Spitfire.
2
@Shelby-Ecoboost-Raptor-550hp The Spitfire could escort the Lancaster as far as Bordeaux or a round trip of 900 milles, the Spitfire really did take the fight to the enemy in almost every major air battle of the war. the Mustang couldn;t escort any bombers until 1944.
2
@matthewvincent8971 The Spitfire was designed to take the Merlin and the Spitfire was the best fighter right to the end of the war, nothing ellse could match the combination of speed, acceleration, climb and manoeuvrability of the Spitfire.

@matthewvincent8971 Guess what little Vincent, the Bf 109 had engine upgrades to the DB 601 and changed to the DB 605 engine to try to keep up with the Spitfire, the Fw 190 had engine upgrades and changes to try to keep up with the Spitfire. the proof is in the reading, try it sometime.

@christianmoore7932 The Fw 190 entered service in 1941, the US wasn't in the war, even in 1942 the US could only send small numbers of bomber and they were mostly escorted by the Spitfire, the first RAF 1,000 bomber raid was at the time the USAAF could only send 12..
1
@davem5333 The RAF soon went to 20 mm, much bigger and more effective than 0.5.
1
@alpine9996 Far too heavy in 1940, it would be more like maybe 4 of them and the RAF knew that 20 mm cannon was the way to go.
1
@spanishpeaches2930 The 109 only had 6 seconds of cannon armament then it was down to just two machine guns.
1
@sentinelxcix2526 The reliability was only in the very thin Spitfire wing, once the Hurricane had the more powerful Merlin XX engine they were fitted with 4 x 20 mm as the Westland Whirwind had earlier. the hitting power of the 20 mm and the reliability by 1941 meant that it didn't need so much ammunition.
1
@spanishpeaches2930 The Bf only had that firing time with the two machine guns, their 20 mm only had 6 seconds.
1
@musosiimo3199 Worth pointing out that the 0.303 served rather well in 1940, by 1941 the RAF were using 20 mm which was far more effective than the 0.5.
1
@spanishpeaches2930 During the Battle of Britain the BF 109 only had enough cannon ammunition for 6 seconds then had to rely on machine guns.
