Quite simply Montgomery wanted to get the war over as quickly as possible, when he was in charge in North Africa the Germans and Italians lost, when he replanned for Sicily and led the operation the German and Italians were defeated, When the British played a secondary role in Italy it was a mess, when Montogomery led all land forces in France the Germans fell back very quickly, when Eisenhower assumed command in September 1944 things slowed to a crawl which frutrated Montgomery and with most supplies going to Patton who was going forward at a snails pace Montgomery was correct all forces should br under a competent leader who knew what he was doing. That wasn't Eisenhower, Bradley or Patton. But for US pride the war could have ended in late 1944.
