The difference is that Denmark has a healthy public debate culture, while Sweden's public debate culture is a train wreck. And we in Norway have the easiest job of all, we have the guidance from Denmark, and the warnings from Sweden. The path forward is easy, but we will take our time. Moving ever so slowly.

We in Norway could predict this 20 years ago. It wasn't really hard to see.

We in Norway welcome this type of Swedish refugees to our country. I think Norway should instate an exchange program with Sweden. Norway will send Sweden some newly arrived "doctors" from MENA countries in exchange for taking in some Swedish "racists" to Norway. Of course, we would need some monetary compensation for this trade, but I'm sure the Swedish government is willing to pay handsomely for the double win to Sweden.

Well, wouldn't call it illegal immigration, when the government actively encourages this type of behavior by giving all sorts of goodies to the people immigrating that way. So instead of "illegal immigrants", maybe call it "preferred immigrants" or something more factually correct.

Who in Sweden? About 80% of the Swedish population thought this was a good idea for decades. We in Norway know that the Swedes are a bit dense. I'm glad they rest of the world starts seeing it too.

Well, the main difference is that Norway can spend untold billions subsidizing the immigrant population - oil reduces frictions in society and dampens waves. Its a very nice substance.
4
@effexon - depends on how you calculate these things. If you say the native Norwegian population is about 4.2 million (population of Norway in 1980), and that it is basically stable, then the rest (approx 1.5 million) would be immigrants and children of those. That would make 1/3 of the Norwegian population immigrant of some type. However, a large portion of that is Swedes and Poles. Which cause very little problems in society, and has been a great boon to Norway.

@LoremIpsum1970 - Norway has had family reunions and stuff, but I'm not sure about the exact details either. But in general the requirements have been tougher than in Sweden. So going to Sweden becomes the default for migrants, and due to Norway's geographical location, it is no point in passing through Sweden to try your luck in Norway, when Sweden is pretty much open. There are important differences in how the Norwegian and Swedish societies work. The public debate is much more healthy in Norway, so the problematic sides of immigration has been in the media since the early 1980s. In Sweden any dissent from "open borders policies" were quelled and actively suppressed until late 2010s. The housing market is totally different in Norway and Sweden. Norway has an extremely liberal housing market, while Sweden has a very government controlled market. A lot more people in Norway own their own house, than renting it. And this goes for a lot of immigrants eventually as well. And house owners doesn't like to see their neighborhoods get a bad reputation. Being able to shower poor people with oil-money, to keep them content also helps. Politically the goal has been "integration" - while in reality Norwegian culture only accept assimilation. You either assimilate or you get frozen out. (Norway is way more nationalistic than Sweden, due to Norway's history).

Yeah... "Rest of Scandinavia" = Denmark + Norway. So that's about the same population. However, the number of firearm homicides in Sweden is many times more than the sum of Denmark + Norway. So his statement is technically correct, and really an understatment.
2
@effexon - exactly. So it is not just the amount, is who you get. Norway could integrated 5 million Swedes in a year. But would struggle with 5 people from ISIS. Just checking the statistics, Norway might have gotten about 250k people from "challenging" countries in total. But that is over a period of 40 years. And it has caused issues, cost a lot of money and lives. But the rate has been absorbable by the country.
2
Well, Sweden's gun murder stats is about 5 times higher pr capita than Norway and Denmark. Which are historically very close to Sweden culturally. I'm sure there would have been some debates in the US if you had gotten 60 million new illegal immigrants, and your gun homicide rate increased by 500% and it all was done by the new immigrants. That's the reality Sweden is having to sort out now for the next few decades.

@LoremIpsum1970 - yes, Norway does spread them out. Its sort of a way to keep the country side populated. But it is also a much lower amount of people being taken in, from different countries. Combine with pretty much endless money supply, the government is able to keep the peace. Slowly over time, the new immigrants will adopt Norwegian life style.

Its not random which cultures produces tyrants and oppressive societies. So when you take people out of those cultures, they are just going to poison their new environment with the same problems that they came from, unless they really want to change themselves.
1
@stefankhoo1618 - yes, it is now. After the problem has become too big to ignore. And SD being the biggest/second biggest party. Not 20 years ago, when you should have done something about it.
