As a Norwegian (with a Swedish wife), I remember the somewhat different approaches taken by Norway and Sweden at the time. (The countries are pretty similar in other respects). What really happened was that the Swedes killed all their old and weak a year or two before the Norwegians did. In 2020 the excess death toll by Sweden was way higher than in Norway. In 2022 it was way higher in Norway than Sweden (but at that point, people were fed up with Covid - and nobody cared). To paraphrase a famous quote: Never before has so many, sacrificed so much, for so few.

My gut feeling is that pubs, bars, concerts are potential hotspots for spreading these kinds of viruses, compared to a lot of other places. So the lack of UK pub culture in Sweden absolutely will affect the spread.

In Norway (that had a some lockdown) the excess death toll was pretty much on par with Sweden when all was said and done (by end 2022). And it was at the end of the day, nothing major. However, the first few months there was a lot of older Swedes dying. Those died 2 years later in Norway, but at that time, nobody really cared. So in reality, the lockdown in Norway gave people's grandmother 2 more years to live, compared to in Sweden.

Norwegian here, and as you know, we are pretty comparable societies. You are correct that Sweden was much harder hit to begin with, so the Norwegian lockdown seems to have worked. However, in Norway the Covid deaths came in 2022 instead. At that point, people were fed up with it, and it barely was mentioned in the news. So at the end of the day, Norway managed to keep some old people alive for a year or two extra compared to Sweden.

@deaodaggi - pretty sure I saw some stats more recently on the excessive deaths in both countries from 2020-2022 and it was pretty much even. A slight bump compared to normal. Only difference was it was in 2020 mainly in Sweden and 2022 in Norway.
