As a Norwegian, I think this video was very good. Joining the EU is not on the table, however our politicians have snuck us closer and closer to the EU over time. Making us more or less de-facto EU members. I wish we had real democracy like Switzerland, but alas, we are stuck with "representative democracy", as the opposition to EU is larger in the population than amongst the politicians.

@kut9682 - The EU / Anti-EU stance is widely spread out on the political spectrum in Norway. But the historic two main parties (left/right) are both pro-EU. But EU is not a hot topic in Norway, because the politicians know bringing it up is a sure-fire way to tank on the opinion-polls. So they get votes on other topics, turn around a tie us closer to EU between the elections.

Making 1/3 of the voter-base "untouchables" is not a good strategy in any democratic country. But from the outside, it looks like German voters are not particularly happy about the current immigration policies. Maybe the politicians should do something about it? Or is it the plan to do like Sweden did? (Ignore it and paint everyone complaining as nazis, until the problem could not be surpressed anymore.)

Norwegian here, so excuse my ignorance. Can not the biggest party just form a minority government and just ask for support on a case by case basis. Also not including AfD in any politics, is just what Sweden did - not a good idea.
36
Well, as a Norwegian I can safely say, we will stay out of that mess as long as possible.
19
As a Norwegian, it was interesting to see what the different political parties in Germany thinks about the EU going forward. I think the general Norwegian population is probably very much on board with AfD on these issues (although our political class is not).
10
Well, as a Norwegian - there is not much to gain for us by joining the EU. We are already deeper into it more than what most people like, when EU comes up with rules and regulations that might work in central Europe, but not so much below the artic.
8
Yeah... And then the environmentalists come in and say - no to mining. And then 20 years of legal battles ensue.
7
Get nukes, or make a Nordic alliance.
7
@bfedezl2018 We have veto power currently, much more valuable.

The system seems to be a tad better than the UK system at least. "Ganging up" to stop the "far-right" was tried in Sweden as well in the 2010s. Only thing that happened was that the "far-right" grew even stronger, because none of the fundamental issues were addressed, and people got even more pissed.

@@a.m.4148 - that's because it doesn't say "made in Norway" on your oil and gas. And maybe you don't eat fish. And you probably won't see made in Norway on your car's aluminum sub-frame. There is a reason Switzerland and Norway is not in the EU club...
5
@niklas4813 - not on Russia. Nobody in Norway supports Russia (only ones being a bit less enthusiastic about supporting Ukraine was the far left, because they don't like war). I'm talking on specifically the stance towards EU. Norwegians want less bureacracy and one-size-fits-not-Norway solutions from EU. But we love to trade with everyone of course.
5
Well, its great to have a very "democratic" system like this. And at the same time politicians actively boycott a big party because they don't like it.
5
@runearntzen6499 - you can trade cherries for oil, all day every day. Without anything else. That's how one trade with every other country out there. No need for political or bureaucratic cooperation to do so.

As a Norwegian, I can tell that Norway will never-ever join this power-grabbing organization. And the more power it tries to grab, the less likely it is to happen. Better to be rich and small, than poor and big.
4
Just make the EU more light weight, and it'll be fine as it is. Of course politicians, which are humans seeking power, will always try to gather more power for themselves. If I was living in a small EU country, I would never have allowed not having veto power.
3
Living in a small European country, I'm happy to not be a major player in world politics. Let the big countries fight it out, I'm more than happy having a good life regardless of that.

@stespfr - "International standards have been ranking Norway as the most democratic country worldwide" - true. Which is why they are useless rankings. Start engaging your own brain, instead of reading and parroting what others think.
2
@ oh, they will grow until it happens. But look to Sweden if you want to see how it will play out.
2
Worked out great for Sweden.... Now they have to combat problems they could have fixed easily 15-20 years ago if they had not ignored their "right-wing" party.
2
@stespfr - yup. Be a good drone and keep parroting useless bull made by torturing statistics until you believed it yourself. The only 2 times Norwegians have actually had a say in the politics of Norway, they thwarted the politicians. Yeah, I can see why giving more such power to the people is not called for. Lets all praise representative "democracy".

Hehe, liked that quote.

@Lukas-lw4eg - naah. The Norwegian oil-fund is spiraling out of control, and growing exponentially. A few more decades now, and it will easily cover the entire Norwegian state budget. While continuning to grow. Then Norway only need to reduce taxes to make it suitable attractive to foreign companies to keep things running.
1
@ if the minority government is a pretty centric one, then it should have most policies at least supported by one other party. And then it just flips flops around and gets the votes it needs from case to case from different parties. I'd argue it is the most democratic way to rule in a parliamentary system. Every thing voted for is going to be something supported by some sort of majority.
1
Well, I hope any money is spent wisely. 3% sounds like a reasonable number to me - Europe should be more independent of the US. Especially since US is more focused on China than Europe is.
1
Naah, Federal United States of Europe won't happen in a very long time.
