So as a Norwegian, watching this from the sideline over the sea - I will not claim to have any super deep understanding of English culture. I do however have an insight (again as a foreigner) into Swedish culture. Both Sweden and England seems to have bumped into the same issues with mass immigration and self loathing.
In Swedens case, I explain it by Swedes lacking nationalism because they have never had to fight for Sweden. A country that has been at peace for 200+ years, and that has never been conquered.
Now this explanation obviously doesn't apply to England, which has a rich history of war and conquest. However, when collonialism went out of fasion after WW2, it seems to me that English nationalism was made into something dirty (because it had been used to oppress a lot of nations).
At the end of the day, both countries end up in a situation where nationalism is considered evil or racist or hateful. Which allows for mass immigration policies to be allowed and go unchecked, until it becomes a huge societal problem. Now Sweden is changing course, but its going to be an uphill battle, and a lot has already been lost. Same seems to be the case for England, which might even have a harder fight in front of it, due to people not having the same collective mindset as the Swedes.
