  3. Well, the government isn't giving enough back. So its currently just an extra tax on the Norwegian population. They should have given 105% back to the people and businesses. It will cause them to loose the next election, which is fine by me.

  4. Watching foreign made movies about how great Norway is, is one of the guilty pleasures of Norwegians. Its dark and cold in the winter. Summer is short and can be rainy. People live mostly inside, and it can be hard to get to know new people as in immigrant. Norwegians are very different when sober and drunk.

  5. As a Norwegian, this was a very good video. No real glaring issues (just a few minor ones), so well researched. (Didn't mention the opening of the seabed for subsea mining, which could potentially be lucrative). Adding to the infinite money glitch, the oil-fund is growing with about 6% a year (after new deposits and subtracting use in the government budget). So in 20-30-40 years, it will (due to compound interest) be so huge Norway won't really need taxes anymore. Then we can add "tax haven" to the money glitch... I remember back in the 90s that we had to worry about the future "pension-wave" (all the boomers having pensions and the government not having money to pay for it). Well, we're in the middle of that now, and not a word about it anymore. The oil fund pays for it all. The Norwegian society isn't really ready for all this wealth, and I wonder how it will affect our society in the future.

  6. Being born here, I must say it's like playing the game on very-easy mode. So it can be a bit boring at times. But we have TV and Internet to watch and enjoy people in other countries doing the hard and very hard runs.

  9. Well, if you behave like a Norwegian in Norway, you will have no problem what so ever as a foreigner. The issue is that quite a few immigrants insist on keeping to their own ways after immigrating, causing unwanted friction with the locals. Of course, 30% of Norway's population is immigrants at this stage. People from some countries have no problems adapting, others have big problems adapting.

  11. CO2 emission pr. capita is just down to accounting. Rail is pretty useless in Norway, because its a sparsely populated. Rail is best for densely populated countries. Undersea gas and power-lines are vulnerable to sabotage. However, Norway's friends list is much longer than Russia's. Electric power balance is having issues because of electrification of oil-rigs and exports. The "demand" is politically motivated, and can be reduced at any time if needed. Hydropower in Norway have very large magazines, and does not depend much on weather, if managed correctly. Market pricing of critical infrastructure is of course a bad idea, and should be fixed. Salmon industry earns money - which is good. These threats have been talked about for 30 years already, so by now I expect to see salmon roaming the woods in packs hunting down moose. Wealth inequality is not a major issue, a major issue is the Norwegian government keeping the population unnecessary poor by bad economic policies and lack of necessary restructurings.

  14. I just saw Canada is opening up some gas export terminals for LNG export on the pacific coast. Does your government have any plans on making sure money from that cash cow eventually ends up with the Canadian people? Or is it just a few rich coperations that will get even richer?

  15. Compound interest is really starting to kick in on that oil-fund. Extrapolating it 20-30-40 years, and it will be so massive its not even funny. Norway would not need taxes at all at that time.

  21. Mainly the harsh winter climate. In Norway you always have to prepare for winter. You have to think long term, you have to do things in due time. Also with few people, everyone has to be resourceful.

  31. Norway's taxes are not that high. Pretty average in Europe. Much lower than Sweden and Denmark, while the welfare state is better.

  32. USA doesn't need an oil fund, as USA has the Dollar. As long as the Dollar is world's reserve currency, US can just print more of it without much problem. However, should it for some reason stop being the world's reserve currency, the American economy would take a massive hit. Because then the US would have to actually export things to pay for the imported goods, instead of just paying with free Dollars.

  44. Labor is very expensive in Norway, which makes it very important for Norwegian companies to always innovate or adopt new innovations/tech as fast as possible. Although there is limited innovation being done in Norway itself (outside of sub-sea oil/gas stuff), Norway are very much early adapters of new things/tech.

  47. Norway has balanced on a knifes edge, but thankfully by using a lot of oil-money on social problems, plus having Sweden work as the lightning rod, it has worked out ok. Also a lot of immigrants in Norway is from Sweden and Poland. Which is just a net positive.

  55. Poverty problem = bad government policies. Gap between rich and poor = not an issue if the poor gets richer. Mental health = yes, because people aren't satisfied with drink alcohol and walk it off anymore. Suicides = yes, but we don't talk about that. Acer Agreement = Government pockets the profit, fleecing people and companies. Basically extra bad tax. Worlds highest taxes = Not true. Pretty average taxes. Cost of living = Yes, pretty high. Bad government policies. Fuel prices = Yes. Bad government policies. Get an EV instead. All in all, minor issues that could easily be fixed. But people vote for parties that wants to spend hundreds of billions of USD on "green policies". Of course you'll get poorer then.

  65.  @marwood9421  - yes, that is true. Over time the Norwegian government will probably reduce taxes as the dividends from the oil-fund continuous to increase. At the moment people are used to them, and are fine with them. Being flashy wealthy is not a goal for a normal Norwegian.

  68. Norwegian here - its a minor news item to us, and hasn't really had much interest from anyone here. Unless EU pushes real hard on it, nothing will be done with it as long as oil/gas is being exported.
