I think of a new piece of software as going on a road trip. You might have an idea of where you are going (hopefully), but which road to take is up to you. Also do you spend more time preparing for the unexpected, like packing a canoe, because maybe you need to cross a stream, or do you rather deal with that if that happens and get busy driving. Planning for things that never happens, is wasted time. Not having planned for things that do happen can also cause delays. And as always, when you are halfway there, the end goal is moved somewhere else.
