Yes, but ICE cars have additional taxes as well. ICE cars for practical purpose have roughly 100% tax on them. And gasoline too - probably 200% tax. That's the real secret sauce of Norway's EV adoption.
2
That's the real magic sauce.

Pro tip. Don't sell the same stuff the US want's to sell.

True, but if you need oil and gas, buy from the cleanest producer. Qatar has 38 tonn CO2/capita, Saudi Arabia 15, and Norway is down to 8.

@spiritanimal7516 - Norway is one of the highest contributors to helping Ukraine. Billions are spent on that. Which everyone is fine with, the war has benefitted Norway economically a lot, and all Norwegians find the actions of Russia horrible.

And the meter of snow in my garden telling a different story.

Hydro cars have already flopped in Norway.

Taxes are normally pre-calculated and deducted from salary before being paid out. So in that sense its not something you need to worry about.

As a Norwegian, the adoption rate in the US is not strange at all. What is just barely touched upon was the insane taxes ICE cars have in Norway. Put a 100% tax on all ICE vehicles and 200% tax on gas in the US - then suddenly EV adoption rate will skyrocket. Of course it is impossible politically to do this in the US, but that was the situation in Norway. (And the reason it was this bad in Norway, was because there is not auto-industry in Norway to keep prices and taxes in check).

@earthwormjim6962 - I think you misunderstood me. I don't think there will be an EV adoption in the US. Because, unlike Norway, US doesn't have a 100% tax rate on ICE vehicles that the government can just skip. The equivalent in the US would be if there was a 50% tax incentive on EVs, paid for by extra tax on gasoline. Don't think that will happen.
1
@chow-chihuang4903 - Wind has a lot of issues, and quite a bit of resistance in Norway. So, I wouldn't bet on wind surpassing hydro in Norway ever.
1
Or Norwegians having a home/rent a place in southern Europe to stay in.
1
@evkx - of course, convert that to beers while going out, and Norway drops a lot.
1
@evkx - yeah, sounds about right.
1
In Norway the daily temperature can vary with 20 degrees. 2 degrees over a century is nothing. We do that in an hour.
1
First thing the US could do would be to get down the average age of your politicians.
1
Because the real issue is just the price of the EV. EVs in Norway is half the price of an similar ICE car. In the US an EV is more expensive. Also electricity is cheaper in Norway and gasoline more expensive (Its about 2 USD/liter now, or about 7.5 USD/gallon).

"You can always count on the Americans to do the right thing after they have tried everything else." - Churchill.
1
As a Norwegian, I can tell you that this partially correct. The EV subsidies thingy was actually one of the biggest mistakes done by the Norwegian government in decades, but it has been turned around and repackaged as a forward thinking environmentally friendly success story. Brilliant marketing by Norway. The real story is kinda long, and much less glamourous.
1
@katydid2877 Price of normal car in US = 40k USD. Price in Norway for same car after taxes applied= 80k USD. Needless to say less people can afford new cars then.
1
@katydid2877 - well, I'm not aware of his political platform, so you might be right. On the other hand, running Norway must be the easiest country for a politician to run in the world. It basically runs itself. But when EVs appeared without any tax on them, compared to ICE with 100% tax - it was a non-brainer for Norwegians to start picking them up.
1
Don't think Americans need to eat more food...
1
Actually saw this complaint from a father of a family that he didn't save much on the EV. As every time they stopped to charge, the kids wanted meals at gas stations prices. So what was saved on fuel was spent on fast-food.

6km wide on the thinnest part.
1
100% ICE car tax, 200% gasoline tax, and then 50% cheaper electricity => How to do Norway's EV adoption.
1
You mean human rights and women's rights and stuff? Yeah, they probably should.
1
"someone not super happy with EVs".... Well, those are hard to come by here in Norway. It would be the sub-culture that loves American muscle cars, but even those guys would probably have an EV as a daily driver. Or some people in very remote parts of Norway. What was just briefly touched on are the ICE taxes in Norway, which are atrocious, and the real reason EV adoption has been a success. If you put 100% tax on ICE cars in the US, and add 200% tax on your gasoline, while giving priority lane access, no tolls, and have cheaper electricity as well - then you'd see a massive EV adoption in the US too. Its not magic, its just money.
