Atheists like to think of themselves as rational people guided by empiricism. Very well - they would therefore have to acknowledge that moderate religion has been empirically proven to be better for both individuals and society than atheism is. That doesn't require them to pretend to believe in a god they don't believe in - but it does logically mean they should cease their efforts to eliminate moderate religious observance from society.

I don't believe for one second they will eradicate religion itself: they have tried many times and have always failed. History tends to go in cycles - and one of them is that when civilisations are debauched and decedent: they think themselves above religion. Then life starts to get hard again, and they realize that having a common glue to bind society together, a basis for a shared morality and a spiritual foundation for coping with the harshness of life - is quite a good idea. "by what metric you assert that religious societies are "better". Religious people are on average considerably happier, less prone to mental illness, less likely to commit suicide, become addicted and suffer from a range of other maladies that are proliferating all across the post-Christian west. Not to mention the worst regimes in history have all been anti-religion.
