Animal welfare is not the same thing as animal rights. The former is based on responsible notions of stewardship and husbandry: the latter on a frankly silly idea of equality between humans and animals.

@scarterw2 "surely you agree that all animals have a right to humane treatment?" I wouldn't put it that way no, not least because a right generally denotes a concomitant responsibility which would be meaningless. I might concede an obligation for humans who work with animals to behave in humane ways - but that comes from the sensibilities of other humans rather than an intrinsic right we give an animal. "Is horse racing humane?" Certainly no less so than many other things we do to animals. If I were an animal welfare advocate - it wouldn't even be in my top ten issues.

And that many chickens die every. . . . .hour? Less? Unless you're a strict vegan, it's a bit silly to get upset by a horse dying every now and then.
