  4. At least the Soviet countries still had some of their traditional culture - they weren't being ordered to cheer as their replacements dismantled everything that gave them an identity.

  6. There has been a persistent and coordinated effort to make our public spaces ugly and depressing, and that goes for our "art" too. When you look at what the Greek sculptors of 23 centuries ago managed with just hammer and chisel. . . . . . . . . .THAT is art.
