  1. The way you gain respect on the left is to be more extreme than everyone else - it's been that way for a couple of hundred years, which inevitably means the whole movement invariably trends towards more and more extremism: and inevitably, violence.

  2.  @OncleM  I love reminding Indian nationalists of this fact when they slag off British rule. You can tell they think they ought to have been allowed to keep doing that - but they don't have the guts to say it.
