  3. The unfashionable truth is Pinochet did a hell of a lot for his country. He saved it from communism, and thus from a Venezuelan style collapse, and implemented economic reforms that saw wealth take off like a rocket. Of course, bitter old communists will never forgive him for thwarting them.
