I remember very vividly watching the coverage of the Fort Hood shooting in 2009: the media were gleefully launching into their usual shtick about "Ban guns! and clearly getting ready to party with this story all day. Then it came out that the shooter was a Muslim extremist - and I swear you could hear the click as the tone of the coverage shifted to one about western victimisation of the Islamic world: and they very quickly stopped covering the story. That really opened my eyes to just how agenda-driven and narrative driven the media is.
