I dated a girl doing a masters at Cambridge for a few years, and fell in with a whole crowd of other people also doing masters courses at Cambridge: and I can confirm that academic ability does not remotely translate to being well-adjusted or having basic common sense about the world. Academia rewards conformity to the weird, abstract culture that exists in higher-education. It's always been that way but it's gotten far worse in recent years with "wokeness" and cancel culture.

  2. Demanding "what are your qualifications", is a sign that the person speaking has never thought for themselves. An assumption that those in authority must bestow their stamp of approval on you before you are permitted to speak. Almost every single intellectual and scientific advance in history has been made by outsiders, not insiders. And those those who fancy themselves "smart" have a habit of believing crack-pot ideas that ordinary people would dismiss immediately.
