Peter Hitchin's has the capacity to think beyond shallow emotionalism and to think beyond the next five minutes - this comes across as arrogance to people who can't.

He really wasn't - he was a blowhard who spend his whole life lurching from one extremist position to another without it ever occurring to him he was wrong about anything. A superficial pub bore who appealed to other superficial pub bores.

Christopher Hitchins appealed to those who liked sensational and superficial melodrama - a chat show host dressing himself as a philosopher. Peter hasn't his flair for drama, but he's much more sober and serious thinking. Which goes over many people's heads.
